Notes |
The Library of the Bar of Lower Canada, section of the district of Montreal, was founded in 1828 by William Badgley and others. For many years, Côme-Séraphin Cherrier was president of the library. Edward John Hemming inventoried and classified the documents of the library, finally publishing them in 1857 as a catalogue, together with those of the Advocate's Library, or la Bibliothèque des Avocats. The Advocate's Library, also founded in 1828, became the Library of the Bar (of Montreal) in 1840, and it is uncertain whether the Library of the Bar of Lower Canada is another name for this institution, or whether the two libraries were indeed founded in the same year as separate institutions. A similar bookplate is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University.
