Notes |
This bookplate belongs to one of a father-son pair both named James Henry Browning. The elder Browning emigrated to Canada with his wife Sarah Jane Browning in 1870, and he served as a stenographer, then a law reporter, and then commissioner for Ontario and Québec in Montreal. They had seven children, of whom at least three survived to adulthood, and at least two died as children. Browning died between 1901 and 1911. The younger Browning (1879-1949) was the eldest Browning child. He initially found work as a stenographer, but quickly turned to music. He and his wife Minnie had at least four children, including a third James Browning. In 1920 Browning and his youngest sister Ethel took custody of their late brother's children, who afterwards lived with Ethel and her family. The two James H. Brownings both lived at 12 St. Thomas Street between 1889 and 1900. The younger Browning lived there again from 1906-1909 and 1919-1921. This bookplate dates to one of those ranges.
