Notes | Rev. Dr. Thomas Bray (1656-1730) created a network of church parish libraries in every deanery in England and Wales throughout the 1690s, as well as in England's colonies, to improve the education and standing of Anglican clergymen. Bray's project grew and influenced the creation of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge (SPCK) in March 1699. In 1729, the Associates of Dr. Bray was founded as a new management group. By the time of Bray's death, there were approximately 80 of these libraries. Bray and his associates wanted to assist the New World colonists by providing books in large numbers that dealt with topics related to intellectual and spiritual needs. While there are books from all genres in Bray's collections throughout Europe and Canada, many highlight the areas of theology, church history, and devotional literature. The associates of the late Rev. Dr. Bray lent this particular book to the Montreal Theological Training College. References: 1) The Queen's College Collection: Thomas Bray Library.
