[Bookplate]
Description
A lion rampant holding a stemmed (slipped) rose above the entwined letters G or C and H, through which is woven a banner with the Latin phrase. The bookplate is rendered in some kind of red ink, which is raised from the paper both from embossing (visible on the back) and a way that the ink itself is raised from the paper.

Notes |
This motto is, in British heraldry, traditionally associated with the Elliott [Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound] and Rathbone of Greenbank and Liverpool families. Use of the motto, however, does not indicate any ties to either family without greater supporting evidence. The owner and creator of this bookplate are unknown. This appears to be printed with a combination of die stamping and thermography. The reverse of the bookplate shows that the image was physically embossed (a hallmark of die stamping), but some of the finer details, like the shading on the motto ribbon, are raised on the front but not embossed into the reverse (a hallmark of thermography, which was frequently used to imitate die stamping).
