Description
1) In orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of an orange and white border surrounding white text on an orange field.
2) In red-orange ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a red-orange and white border surrounding white text on a red-orange field.
3) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black link border surrounding black text.
4) In black ink on green paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border surrounding black text.
5) In black ink on yellow paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black border in the likeness of an open book surrounding black text on the open spread of the book.
6) In black ink on white paper, the booksellers' ticket consists of a black decorative border with maple leaves in the four corners, surrounding an oval border containing the booksellers' name, surrounding the booksellers' address on an illustration of a scroll at the center.
7) The gold metallic, embossed booksellers' ticket consists of a maple leaf surrounded by laurel branches at the center of the ticket. Text and an outer border surround the center image.

Charles-Odilon Beauchemin (1822-1887) was a printer and book seller born at Sainte-Monique, Lower Canada, on March 29, 1822. Beauchemin entered Séminaire de Nicolet in 1836, but was forced to leave in order to provide for his family when his father died in 1841. While at seminary, Beauchemin was fascinated by machinery and is said to have built the chapel organ and to have taken an interest in the various processes of bookbinding. After spending an unknown amount of time with Montreal printer John Lovell, in 1842 Beauchemin planned to open a bookstore and bindery in New England, but while being detained in Montreal, he managed to sell his entire stock of several hundred books and decided to remain in Montreal. Between 1852 and 1863, Beauchemin entered into a partnership with Charles Payette (Beauchemin & Payette). After marrying Louise Valois of Pointe-Claire, Canada East, Beauchemin went into partnership with his brother-in-law, notary Joseph-Moése Valois, under the name of Beauchemin et Valois in 1864-the partnership lasted 22 year. In 1886, after Valois retired, Beauchemin went into partnership with his son Joseph-Odilon (one of his eight children), who had been the company's secretary since 1876. The firm was known from then as the Librairie C.-O. Beauchemin et fils. The firm began publishing its famous Almanach du peuple in 1855, which became an annual publication in 1870. Throughout his career, Beauchemin remained interested in the technical aspects of his business, assembling some of the machines himself, improving others, and attending to the presses, stereotyping shop, and bindery. After Beauchemin's death in Montreal on November 29, 1887, the business experienced remarkable growth, making Beauchemin's son Joseph-Odilon a millionaire by 1920. Several Beauchemin booksellers' tickets are also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University.
