Notes |
Léger (baptized Joseph) Brousseau Sr. was born in Québec City on May 21, 1826. His older brother, Jean-Docile Brousseau, had a bookstore and print shop on Rue Buade, and was appointed the official printer for the archdiocese of Québec in 1855 and became owner of Le Courrier du Canada in 1858. Léger entered into a partnership with his brother, and then began using his own name as publisher when Jean-Docile embarked on a political career in 1861. A successful publisher, Léger also became the Québec agent of several renowned European publishers during the 1880s. He passed away on February 8, 1890, but his bookshop and printing works continued to operate after his death. This bookbinder's ticket indicates that the printing works (and presumably also the bookshop) operated under Léger's name at least until 1897. For the first few years after Léger's death, his shops were under his son's care. Financial difficulties forced Léger Brousseau Jr to sell the businesses a few years later, so it is unknown if, at the time of this ticket's creation, the shops were still being managed by the Brousseau family.
