Notes |
This ticket belongs to the bookstore of Hector Bossange and Denis-Benjamin Papineau, who were in partnership from 1818 to 1819. Hector Bossange was the son of Martin Bossange, a famous Parisian bookseller. Hector moved from Paris to Québec, settling in Montreal. He opened the Bossange bookstore in 1815 as a branch of the Galeries Bossange, which was one of the largest firms in Paris. In 1816, he married Julie Fabre, the sister of Édouard-Raymond Fabre, a notable bookseller and politician from Montreal. Papineau was born on November 13, 1789, in Montreal. In addition to being the partner of Bossange for two years, Papineau was also a seigneur, merchant, justice of the peace, and politician. Although his political decisions often were controversial and drew much criticism, historians generally agree that Papineau was more important as a seigneur and seigneurial agent.
