Notes |
Owner may have been Emily Ogden Wheeler (1844-1918). Emily O. Wheeler was born on January 29, 1844, the third of seven children to Nelson Knox Wheeler (1807-1880) and Emily Butler Ogden (1815-1884). Wheeler was the designer of the 1885 Soldiers' Monument in Sharon, Connecticut, as well as the town's stone clock tower, which was dedicated to the memory of her mother and designed in collaboration with her sister, Laura. Although Wheeler appears to have lived for a time in New York City, she spent her later years in Sharon, where in 1895 she founded a summer residence, known as the Bobolink, for children being treated at the Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled Children in New York. Wheeler's eldest brother, William Ogden Wheeler, compiled a family genealogy entitled The Ogden Family in America, Elizabethtown Branch, and Their English Ancestry, which was printed in 1907 for private circulation. Wheeler died in 1918 in Sharon, CT. The quotation that appears on the bookplate is from the poem 'Personal Talk' by William Wordsworth.
