Joseph Hunt Stanford was born on November 9th 1871 in Tipton, England and died in 1935. Stanford married Una A. E. Rigg and had 2 sons and 2 daughters. He studied architecture at the South Kensington School in England and entered the profession in 1899 in London. He worked in several architectural practices in Cambridge and London before moving to Canada in March of 1902. In 1904, Stanford opened his own office in Toronto. His son, Leo Hunt, joined the practice in 1922, which was then called 'J. Hunt Stanford and Son, General Architectural Practice.' The practice was located at 57 Queen St. West in Toronto. Examples of their work include the Hampton Court Apartments, St. Charles Court Apartments, and the Aldgate Apartments. The City of Toronto Archives now holds a number of architectural plans created by Stanford. Stanford was an active member of both the Toronto Theosophical Society and the Toronto Dickens Fellowship. He also wrote a book of poetry published in 1906 called 'Miriam and Other Poems' and numerous dramatizations of Charles Dickens' work. Stanford's bookplates have been found in works on Theosophy, Buddhism, and Thomas Carlyle, and McGill University's Phillipe Masson ex Libris Collection also holds a copy of the bookplate pictured here.
