Notes |
UBC's Thomas Murray Bookplate Collection also includes another bookplate originally owned by Nancy Stuart Reid. The names of Nancy's parents were Alexander T. Reid and Emily Fawcett. It is likely that Alexander was Nancy's sibling and that he was named after both of his parents. Nancy's bookplate features two children, a girl and a boy, which may represent Nancy and Alexander. The bookplate shown here is an example of a naïve style of artwork. Naïve art often aims to replicate the perspective and style of children. Sometimes naïve art is actually the work of children. Both Alexander and Nancy's bookplates were created using a similarly naïve style and it is likely that both bookplates were created for or by Nancy and Alexander while they were children.
