Notes |
The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries saw the development and great success of circulating libraries that were commercially run and that charged patrons a small subscription for borrowing books. Indeed, circulating libraries became very fashionable, and their collections often focused on such popular materials as fiction, poetry, travel, biography, and periodicals. The Park Lending Library was based in Montreal, and according to the city directory, the library existed from 1936 to 1953, changing ownership several times during this period. The directory records identify the following proprieters: Florence E. Hawker, Stanley Leonard, and an individual with the surname Grassman. On recto in black ink: "#4210'/'3" (lending fee has been altered to 3 cents)/'0' (closing time has been altered to 10 p.m.)
