[Bookplate for James Stevenson by H. Wilson] Wilson, H.

Description

A Latin phrase is written on a banner at the top of the plate. Beneath it is a hand ascending from a heraldic silk wreath, holding a crown of leaves. While illustrated in a pictorial style, the image is reminiscent of the heraldic image of a dexter hand couped at the wrist, holding a crown of laurel or bay leaves.

Notes	James Stevenson was born in Ireland August 1, 1827 and moved to Canada in 1840. He was a council member for Peterborough town and was mayor of the town for six years ; he eventually became a Conservation member of the Canadian House of Commons, representing Peterborough West between 1887 to 1896. He died October 26, 1910. H. Wilson is possibly the engraver, illustrator, and copperplate and lithographic printer who was working in Glasgow as early as 1826. He provided work for the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations 1851' in London, in the Fine Arts category of 'Sculpture, Models, and Plastic Art, Mosaics, and Enamels, Etc.' and is identified in the catalogue as an ornamental printer. He visited Paris in 1829 and experimented with chalk printing and in 1839 claimed that he was printing in color ; in 1854, he was using a lithographic press.
