Notes |
Herbert Raine was born in Sunderland, England in1875. Raine was educated at the Sunderland School of Art, the Royal Academy School in London, and apprenticed as an architect to Sir Aston Webb. Raine trained primarily as an architect and studied drawing as part of his architectural career. After travelling in Europe, Raine immigrated to Canada in 1907 and began work in Montréal. At the beginning of World War I, Raine began producing etchings. He became well known for his etchings, producing many prints featuring sites in Montréal and Québec. His work was influenced by the French artist, Charles Menyon. Raine was also a member of several professional associations, namely, the Canadian Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (formed in 1916), the Art Association of Montréal, and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Considering Raine's extensive career in etching, it is likely that he created his own bookplate. The University of British Columbia's Rare Books and Special Collections holds a copy of Raine's Old Montreal, a book featuring seventeen reproductions of Raine's etchings of Montréal.
