Notes |
The exact identity of the owner could not be determined, however based on the history of the Thomas Murray Bookplate collection and the style of the bookplate, it's possible that the owner was longtime Montreal resident Mary Alice Peck (1855-1943). Born to well-off family and educated at boarding schools in England, she was the first president of the Montreal Branch of the Women's Art Association of Canada (WAAC) in 1894. Along with May Phillips she made home arts and handicrafts, particularly weaving, a priority of WAAC and later co-founded the Canadian Handicrafts Guild with Phillips. A mother of seven children and a talented artist in her own right, she travelled extensively through Canada and the world as Chairmen of the Guild's extension committee, looking for new outreach opportunities and programs.
