Notes |
George Grote was born on November 17, 1794 in Clay Hill, England, and died June 18, 1871 in London. He was a historian best known for his twelve volume work, 'History of Greece,' written between 1846 and 1856. Originally a banker at his father's bank with no university education, Grote was greatly involved in politics and public life, serving as a member of Parliament and as a Vice-Chancellor of the University of London. After his death, he was buried in Westminster Abbey. Many of George Grote's works can be found in the UBC Library Catalogue.
