Description

In black ink. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with a mullet, pierced, azure (blue), at the fess point, surrounded by three cross crosslets, fitched, gules (red), two over one. The shield itself is constructed from rococo scrolls and is surrounded by elaborate vegetative mantling, finishing in a pair of tassels. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, charged with a straight wreath, and a cubit arm, clutching a cross crosslet fitchy. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originators Latin motto.

Notes
Although it is not clear to which member of the Adam family this bookplate belonged, the charges and motto are cited by Burke's "Landed Gentry" as belonging to the Adam family of Blair, (formerly county Kinross), Scotland. The Adam of Blair Adam family had many eminent members and was made famous by the neoclassical architect and designer, Robert Adam (1728-1792). Descendents of Robert Adam, still live at Blair Adam, in the home built by Robert Adam's father, William, a renowned architect in his own right. The country estate was purchased in 1731, and the 'Blair' (as the house has come to be called), was built in 1733.
