Notes |
Although research proved inconclusive, it seems likely that this ex libris belonged to George Wilkins, M.D. of Montreal, Canada. Born in 1842 in Mountrath, Ireland, George Wilkins, emigrated to Canada where he earned his medical degree at the University of Toronto in 1866. After travel and post-graduate work in London where he earned an M.R.C.S., Wilkins returned to Canada. In 1871 he moved to Montreal where he lectured in pathology and practical physiology at the University of Bishops College. Bishops College later merged with McGill University, where Wilkins was appointed Professor of Medical Jurisprudence in 1882 and also lectured in histology. Throughout his career Wilkins served numerous appointments, including, physician to the Montreal General Hospital (1876), Medical Director of the Sun Life Assurance Company (1880), President of the Montreal Medico-Chirurgical Society (1897) and president of the American Association of Medical Directors of Life Insurance (1911).
