Description
This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Above the escutcheon is a capless-crown denoting baron status, and above the crown is a peer helmet, positioned three-quarters, with mantling radiation from it and surrounding the escutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. At dexter and sinister are two men, each holding a flag charged with a cross patee. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire arms is another banner, with bookplate owner's name and title.

Bookplate belongs to Almeric Hugh Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough (1861-1949), a politician and yachtsman. He was also the founder of the Military Massage Service and the Almeric Paget Massage Corps., both participating in the efforts of World War I. Paget also sponsored the Cambridge Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. Son of General Lord Alfred Henry Paget and Cecilia Wyndam, Paget was educated between 1875-1877 at Harrow School in London and later at Corpus Christi College at Cambridge University. In his later career, he was President of the Easter Provincial Division of the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations in 1909, and also held the office of High Sheriff of Suffolk in the same year. Between 1910-1917, Paget held the office of Parliamentary Provincial Whip for the Eastern and Home Counties and created the 1st Baron Queenborough of Kent on 18 January 1918. He held the post of Treasurer of the League of Nations from 1920-1936, resigning from his position in protest at the League's recognition and acceptance of the Soviet Union. Paget had two daughters with first wife Pauline Whitney, Olive Cecilia and Dorothy Wyndham. Paget died in 22 September 1949.
