Notes |
This bookplate likely belongs to Basil Woodd Smith, a London lawyer, born 9 March 1831 to Seth Smith (15 December 1791 - 14 November 1852) of 33 Eaton Square and Elizabeth (d. 14 November 1852), daughter of William Rose, of Paddington. His father, had originally hoped his son would work on the Stock Exchange, however, Basil Woodd found the work uncongenial and abandoned it. He lived at Hampstead, and was apparently involved in a number of causes. At Hampstead, he sat as chairman of the bench of magistrates, and assisted local philanthropic institutions, including many years as chairman of the Orphan Working Schools. He was apparently a man of strong religious convictions, and attended sessions of the Bible Society. In addition to an interest in Biblical archaeology, he was an amateur astronomer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society on 10 May 1861. Basil Woodd Smith was married twice ; first to Emma Jane (d. 4 July, 1870) daughter of George Butcher-Lea, of The Larches, Kidderminster who he married 9 October 1855 ; and second to Helen Jane Prance (d. 14 April, 1891) on 13 February 1872. He left eight children when he died in 1901.
