Notes |
Bookplate belongs to a Charles Eliot Norton (1827-1908), an art history and literary scholar born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born to Andrew Norton, a Unitarian theologian, and Catherine Eliot, a professor of sacred literature at Harvard, Norton was educated at Harvard himself. He eventually settled back at Harvard as a professor of art history after travelling from place to place, including Boston, Europe, and India. He often travelled back to Europe and England, and notably forged friendships with Thomas Carlyle and Leslie Stephen (father of Virginia Woolf). Paper damage at centre of plate.
