Bookplate related to Thomas George Knapp (1766-1843), Esq., of Norwood, Surrey, and his daughter, Mary Ann (referred to as Maria Anna Grimaldi in this bookplate). Thomas George Norwood was born on 4 Feb. 1766 at Haberdashers' Hall in Norwood. He married Sarah-Elizabeth, the daughter of William Hambly, esq. of Ivinghoe in 1795. They had 13 children together: Hambly (b. 1796), Thomas-George (b. 1799), Henry (b.1811), Charles (b.1814), Sarah-Ann (b.1802), Mary-Ann (b.1803), and Emma (b.1812). Notably, his daughter Mary-Ann married Stacey Grimaldi in 1825, at St. Michael, Wood-street. Stacey Grimaldi (1790-1863), was titled Marquess Grimaldi, being of the Genoese nobility. According to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was an antiquary, genealogist, and solicitor. He is the son of William Grimaldi, Marquess Grimaldi (1751-1830), and Frances (d.1813), the daughter of Louis Barker of Rochester. Stacey and Mary-Ann had six sons and three daughters. According to his obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine (1863, pg 661), Stacey was "as eminent as a Record layer" and had "an extensive library [which] contained many rare works" on genealogy and heraldry. The Gentleman's Magazine also notes that Stacey was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1824, and published "Origines Genealogica" in 1828 and a few lesser known titles. Thomas George Knapp was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and, according to his obituary in The Gentleman's Magazine (volume 143, 1843), was "admitted as a solicitor in the four Courts at Westminster." He was elected clerk of the Haberdashers' Company from 1790-1826, was Associate of the Home Circuit from 1815-1826, appointed Associate of the Court in 1824. He died at 77 years of age at Norwood, and buried at All Saints, Norwood, alongside his youngest Daughter Emma, who died in 1840 of consumption. This bookplate seems to be primarly a memorial of Thomas Geroge Knapp.
