[Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft]

In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin.

Henry Flitcroft was born August 30, 1697 and died February 25, 1769. He was a major English architect, considered to be of the second generation of Palladianism. His father was a labourer in the gardens at Hampton Court. Henry Flitcroft began as a joiner by trade. Apparently while working as a carpenter at Burlington House, he fell from a scaffold and broke his leg. During the period of recuperation, Lord Burlington took notice of his of Flitcroft's artistic talent. By 1720 Flitcroft was Burlington's draughtsman and general architectural assistant. In this role, he surveyed the Westminster School for Burlington's dormitory, and presided as superintendent at the site at Tottenham House. Flitcroft redrew for publication the drawings for The Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones, published by William Kent in 1727, under Burlington's patronage and supervision. In May 1726, Henry Flitcroft received an appointment at the Office of Works, with the help of Burlington, where he worked his way from Master Carpenter and Master Mason to Comptroller of the King's Works.
