Description
In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue).

Rainald Knightley (Baron Knightley) was an English landowner and politician. He was born at Upper Brook Street, London, on 22 October 1819. He was the second child and only son of Sir Charles Knightley, second baronet (d. 1864), of Fawsley Park, near Daventry, Northamptonshire, and his wife, Selina Mary, daughter of Felton Lionel Hervey of Englefield Green, Surrey. The Knightley family was one of the oldest in Northamptonshire, having occupied the estate of Fawsley continuously since the reign of Henry V. Rainald Knightley was educated at Eton College and with a private tutor. He succeeded his father as Conservative member of parliament for Northamptonshire in 1852, representing the county until 1892. In 1864 Sir Charles died and Knightley succeeded as third baronet, inheriting an estate of 8000 acres and the Tudor house at Fawsley. On 20 October 1869, Rainald Knightley married Louisa Mary Bowater (Louisa Mary Knightley, 1842-1913). They had no children. After his retirement from politics, Knightley was rewarded with a peerage, being created Baron Knightley of Fawsley on 23 August 1892. He died at Fawsley Park on 19 December 1895 and was buried at Fawsley. The peerage became extinct on his death.
