Description
This heraldic bookplate consists of a crest of a stag at gaze, which is upon a small version of a coronet of duke status. Surrounding the crest in a circular orientation is a garter of azure (blue), with French motto within. Surrounding the garter is a heraldic collar, with twelve roses (surrounded by circular garters with French motto within) at regular intervals. Upon the collar is a full version of a coronet of duke status, and immediately below the collar (as a pendant) is a rendering of the biblical event of St. George slaying the dragon.

Most likely belonging to Sir George Frederick Samuel Robinson, the Earl of Ripon who succeeded his uncle the second Earl de Grey, Thomas Philip (1781-1859) (See bookplate BP MUR ENG P G7498). Sir George Frederick Samuel Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon, was born on 24 October 1827 and died 9 July 1909. He was the son of Frederick John Robinson, the 1st Earl of Ripon and Lady Sarah Albinia Louisa Hobart. (Frederick John Robinson was the second son of Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham ; the first son is Thomas Philip Earl de Grey). Sir George succeeded his father's title on 18 January 1859 among other titles that year ; he also succeeded to the title of Viscount Goderich. Sir George was an active politician his entire life. He held the office of a Member of Parliament numerous times, including: Hull (1852-53), Huddersfield (1853-57), West Riding, Yorkshire (1857-59), North Riding, Yorkshire (1873-1906). He also held the office of Lord President of the Council (1869-73), Governor-General and Viceroy of India (1880-1884), First Lord of the Admiralty (1886), Mayor of Ripon (1895), and Lord Privy Seal (1905-1908).
