[Bookplate for Lionel Damer]
Description
In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided barry of six pieces, nebule, argent (silver) and gules (red), and a bend, engrailed, azure (blue). At the precise middle chief is a crescent, the symbol of the second son. The escutcheon also contains an inescutcheon, divided per cross. The first quadrant, argent, contains an unknown symbol, possibly a garbe, sable (black). The fourth quadrant, also argent, contains two of the same symbol. The second quadrant, divided per fess, or (gold) and azure (blue), contains two swans with wings displayed. The third quadrant is the same, except it contains only a single swan. The crest is an oval frame containing a talbot's head in a crown. Above the crest is floral mantling which extends down both sides of the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto.

Notes |
This bookplate could possibly belong to one of the following members of the Dawson-Damer line (it is unclear why the escutcheon contains a crescent, as all three of the following men appear to have been first sons, not second sons): Lionel Seymour William Dawson-Damer, 4th Earl of Portarlington was born on 7 April 1832. He was the son of Colonel Rt. Hon. George Lionel Dawson and Mary Georgiana Emma Seymour. He married Hon. Harriet Lydia Montagu, daughter of General Sir Henry Montagu, 6th Baron Rokeby and Magdalen Hurley, on 19 April 1855. He died on 17 December 1892 at age 60. Lionel George Henry Seymour Dawson-Damer, 5th Earl of Portarlington was born on 19 August 1858. He was the son of Lionel Seymour William Dawson-Damer, 4th Earl of Portarlington and Hon. Harriet Lydia Montagu. He married Emma Andalusia Frere Kennedy, daughter of Nigel Kennedy and Catherine Anne May, on 25 October 1881. He died on 31 August 1900 at age 42. Lionel George Henry Seymour Dawson-Damer, 6th Earl of Portarlington was born on 26 August 1883. He was the son of Lionel George Henry Seymour Dawson-Damer, 5th Earl of Portarlington and Emma Andalusia Frere Kennedy.
