Description
This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within.

Owned by John Darby of Markly, Warbleton, Sussex . Darby was born in 1751 and supposedly profited from a series of naval contracts during the Napoleonic wars. Before his death in 1834, he married the daughter of Samuel Vaughan named Anne (d. 1847) and also inherited Leap Castle, King's county in Ireland in 1823. He is the father of six sons including John Nelson Darby (1800-1882), an influential Anglo-Irish evangelist, famous for being a member of the Plymouth Brethern, a fundamentalist protestant sect. He wrote a number of influential biblical works, and is most well known for his Synopsis of the Books of the Bible (1857'67). UBC Library has two of his items in the catalogue. Sir Henry D'Esterre Darby (1750-1823), the figure whom the bookplate likely derives aspects from, served at the Battle of the Nile at Aboukir Bay under Horatio Nelson in 1798 as a commander of the HSS Bellerophon. He was promoted to Vice Admiral of the White in 1811. The medal is most likely a Naval Gold Medal (Captain's) for the Battle of the Nile, which depicts Britannia holding a shield and a spear, being crowned by a Winged Victory.
