Summary, 1974-78 74 Report of the Superintendent of Insurance Department of Insurance, Vancouver, B.C., November 1,1979. The Honourable James A. Nielsen, Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs Sir: Pursuant to the Insurance Act, I beg to submit the Sixty-eighth Annual Report to the Department of Insurance covering the year ended December 31, 1978. At that date, 335 insurers were licensed under the Act to transact business. The following summary indicates the origin of the insurers, how many hold only Provincial licences, and how many had Federal registry in addition to a Provincial licence: Where Incorporated Provincial Licence Federal Registry Total 6 10 9 _ "i 7 135 21 1 2 1 1 2 1 1 3 ■y i i 3 126 13 145 30 1 Finland 2 2 1 Holland 2 India _ —_ _ _ _„_. 1 1 Italy 3 2 1 2 3 United States 126 Totals 27 308 A complete list of insurers will be found on subsequent pages. For purposes of convenience, the present list is made up to June 30, 1979, so that it includes insurers licensed since December 31, 1978, and shows the classes of insurance for which each is licensed. During the year, 19 insurers ceased to transact business in the Province while 18 new insurers were licensed. On analysis, the list shows that 125 companies (exclusive of fraternal societies) were licensed for life insurance, 183 for fire insurance, and 95 for marine insurance. These cover only the major classes of insurance, and it should be understood that the same company may be licensed, for example, for fire, life, and marine insurance. The annual statements of these companies incorporated by or under an Act of the Legislature are set forth at length in the following pages. The taxes collected on unlicensed insurance amount to $234,000. The number of insurance agents' and salesmen's licences issued for the year 1978 is given on page 8, together with a comparative table for the previous four years. 7 BRITISH COLUMBIA All licences in the insurance industry now have a pre-licence examination requirement.
