The Honourable James A. Nielsen,
Minister of Consumer and Corporate Affairs
Sir: Pursuant to the Insurance Act, I beg to submit the Sixty-seventh Annual
Report to the Department of Insurance covering the year ended December 31,
1977.
At that date, 343 insurers were licensed under the Act to transact business.

A complete list of insurers will be found on subsequent pages. For purposes
of convenience, the present list is made up to June 30, 1978, so that it includes
insurers licensed since December 31, 1977, and shows the classes of insurance for
which each is licensed.
During the year, eight insurers ceased to transact business in the Province,
while 15 new insurers were licensed. On analysis, the list shows that 127 companies (exclusive of fraternal societies) were licensed for life insurance, 185 for
fire insurance, and 87 for marine insurance. These cover only the major classes of
insurance, and it should be understood that the same company may be licensed,
for example, for fire, life, and marine insurance.
The annual statements of these companies incorporated by or under an Act
of the Legislature are set forth at length in the following pages.
The taxes collected on unlicensed insurance amount to $189,000.
The number of insurance agents' and salesmen's licences issued for the year
1977 is given below, together with a comparative table for the previous four years.
