The Honourable Alexander B. Macdonald, Q.C,
Attorney-General, Victoria, B.C.
Sir: Pursuant to the Insurance Act, I beg to submit the Sixty-fourth Annual
Report to the Department of Insurance covering the year ended December 31, 1974.
At that date, 325 insurers were licensed under the Act to transact business.
The following summary indicates the origin of the insurers, how many hold only
Provincial licences, and how many had Federal registry in addition to a Provincial

A complete list of insurers will be found on pages 9 to 30. For purposes of
convenience, the present list is made up to June 30, 1975, so that it includes insurers
licensed since December 31, 1974, and shows the classes of insurance for which
each is licensed.
During the year, 21 insurers ceased to transact business in the Province while
15 new insurers were licensed. On analysis, the list shows that 120 companies
(exclusive of fraternal societies) were licensed for life insurance, 172 for fire
insurance, and 85 for marine insurance. These cover only the major classes of
insurance, and it should be understood that the same company may be licensed for
example, for fire, life, and marine insurance.
The Automobile Insurance Act has precluded licensed companies from providing automobile insurance as it is now being provided by the Crown corporation,
the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia.
The annual statements of these companies incorporated by or under an Act
of the Legislature are set forth at length on pages 31 to 46.
The taxes collected on unlicensed insurance amount to $45,000.
The number of insurance agents' and salesmen's licences issued for the year
1974 is given below, together with a comparative table for the previous four years.
