Sir,—Pursuant to the Insurance Act, I beg to submit the Fifty-second Annual Report of the Department of Insurance covering the year ended December 31, 1962. At that date 354 insurers were licensed under the Act to transact business. Thirteen new insurers were licensed during the year. These are as follows: The Acadia Life Insurance Company; Allstate Insurance Company of Canada; Canadian Pioneer Insurance Company; Commerce and Industry Insurance Company; Emmco Insurance Company; Firemen's Mutual Insurance Company; General Insurance Company Helvetia, Limited; Home and Overseas Insurance Company, Limited; Income Insurance Company of Canada; Missisquoi & Rouville Insurance Company; Newfoundland American Insurance Company; Pierce Insurance Company; and Western Surety Company. Nine insurers ceased to transact business in the Province during the year, and these were: The Cambrian Insurance Company, Limited; Canadian Fire Insurance Company; Essex & Suffolk Insurance Company, Limited; The Marine Insurance Company, Limited; Merchants Fire Assurance Corporation of N.Y.; The North River Insurance Company; Northwestern National Insurance Company; The Palatine Insurance Company, Limited; and The Royal Scottish Insurance Company, Limited. A complete list of insurers will be found on pages 10 to 37. A similar list, made up to December 31, 1962, was published in The British Columbia Gazette. For the purposes of convenience, the present list is made up to June 30, 1963, so that it B 8 BRITISH COLUMBIA includes insurers licensed since December 31, 1962, and shows the classes of insurance for which all insurers are now licensed. On analysis the list shows that 74 companies (exclusive of fraternal societies) were licensed for life insurance, 223 for fire insurance, 213 for automobile insurance, and 103 for marine insurance. These figures cover only the major classes of insurance, and it should be understood that the same company may be licensed, for example, for fire, automobile, and marine insurance. The annual statements of the companies holding Provincial licences only are set forth at length on pages 40 to 52. There were two underwriters' agencies licensed under the Act, and the list appears on page 39. The taxes collected on unlicensed insurance amount to $3,931.51. The Association of Superintendents of Insurance met at Regina, Sask., for its 45th annual conference, commencing September 17, 1962. Attending at the open sessions were more than 169 representatives of the insurance industry. The association officers for the 1962/63 term are: President, Gustave E.
