17 Geo. 5 Report of the P.G.E. Railway Co. DD 1
REPORT OF THE PACIFIC GREAT EASTERN
RAILWAY COMPANY.
By
W. J. Blake Wilson, Vice-President.
Willaed Kitchen, Director. C. Spencer, Director.
(Presented to Legislative Assembly by the Honourable Minister of Railways,
■January 25th, 1927.)
Vancouver Block,
Vancouver, B.C., January 11th, 1927.
e Lieutenant-Governor in Council,
Parliament Buildings, Victoria, B.C.
Your Honour:
In submitting our report, which recommends the expenditure of a large sum of money for
the replacement of and betterments to bridges, trestles, culverts, and cribs during tbe current
year, we might state that we believe it wise to maintain and operate the railway, because of
the future development of tbe timber, mineral, and agricultural resources of the country served
by it, and because of the large sum of money already invested in the undertaking.
Without going into detail, we are satisfied that there are great opportunities for mining
development, large tracts of good land for settlement, and sufficient timber to ensure in the
future traffic for the railway and to justify the continuance of its operation.
We would ask you to provide the sum of $3,000,000 which we propose to spend on betterments and replacements during the next three or four years, as in our best judgment we may
determine.
It is our intention to undertake this year the replacement by permanent structures of
bridges and trestles which have reached the end of their safe existence and maintain others
whose life is not so far advanced, by reasonable repairs, so that tbe heavy cost of replacement
will be spread over several years.
The more economical operation of the system is a matter which is receiving serious consideration and efforts are being made towards a substantial reduction in expense during the
current year.
We recommend that information be secured as to the cost of making the lands in Pemberton
Valley available for agriculture and also that the acreage be ascertained.
There is no pressing need at this time for extension of the railway at either end, and with
the expenditure with which the Company is faced for renewals and betterments, we recommend
that there should not be any railway construction or extension during the present year.
We do not think it advisable to neglect any opportunity which may present itself for the
sale of the railway and would recommend granting very favourable terms, providing the purchasers will bring about the settlement of adjacent lands.
We beg to remain,
Your obedient servants,
(Signed) W. J. Blake Wilson, Vice-President.
Willard Kitchen, Director.
C Spencer, Director.
