BALANCE-SHEET AND  STATEMENT OF RECEIPTS AND DISBURSEMENTS.

Dear Sirs,—I beg to submit the following annual statements for your approval:—
Balance-sheet as at March 31st, 1922, and statement of receipts and disbursements for the
year ending March 31st, 1922.
University Site, Point Grey.
During the year the sum of $5,0S4.94 was expended at Point Grey, the greater part of which
was for additions and alterations to the dormitories which are now rented in suites to the farmworkers. As will be noted in the statement of disbursements, this work cost $4,976.50, while
the balance was for erecting electric-light poles, etc.
University Site, Fairview.
The sum of $3,068.14 was expended on buildings and fixtures during the year. This
comprises the balance of contract for additions to Biology and Chemistry Buildings and lockers
and tables for Departments of Bacteriology and Chemistry.
Provincial Government Grant.
The Provincial Government grant for the year ending March 31st, 1922, was $445,000, and
a special grant of $1,500 was received towards the Summer School work.
Other Grants and Contributions..
During the year 1921-22 the University received $43,000 under the Dominion " Agricultural
Instruction Act," and $5,000 from the Canadian Red Cross Society (British Columbia Branch)
towards the maintenance of the Department of Public Health. These grants are given for
salaries, travelling expense, etc., in agricultural extension work and salaries of teaching staff
in the Department of Public Health respectively, and cannot be used for general university
purposes.
Students' Scholarships, Prizes, and Loans.
The Khaki University presented to the University of British Columbia the sum of $12,000
as an endowment for the Khaki University and Y.M.C.A. Memorial Scholarship and Loan Fund
for Returned Soldiers. Province of British Columbia bonds bearing interest at 6 per cent, per
annum for the sum of $12,000 were purchased at a cost of $95.52, giving an annual income of
$720.
The Captain LeRoy Memorial Fund was added to by a purchase of $2,500 of Province of
British Columbia bonds, making a total endowment for this fund of $4,500, giving an annual
revenue of $260.
The Vancouver Women's Canadian Club presented to the University three Dominion of
Canada War Loan bonds to the total value of $1,550 as an endowment for the Vancouver
Women's Canadian Club Scholarship in Canadian History.
Details of the above-mentioned bonds, along with all the others held by the University, will
be found in detail under " Assets," subheading " Trusts."
Cash scholarships and prizes presented to the University during the year will be found in
detail under " Receipts," subheading " Students' loans, scholarships, and prizes."
Depreciation on Buildings and Equipment.
The usual procedure has been followed regarding depreciation—namely, an allowance of
10 per cent., the same being added to general expenditures. Q 6

Book-store (Students' Texts).
The book-store was operated during the year under the Bursar's Department and shows a
profit of $2,554.42, while the total receipts from this source show $2,591 in excess of expenditures
for the purchase of texts during the current year,   .
Rents, Produce, and Live Stock at Point Grey.
The sum of $11,375.77 was received from the above departments and this amount was
credited to general expenditures.    (See "Receipts" for'details.)
Fire Insurance.
The amount of fire insurance in force at March 31st, 1922, was $283,190, distributed as
follows:—
University buildings, Point Grey  $65,100 00

Total   $283,190 00
Unexpired fire-insurance premiums at March 31st, 1922, amount to $5,382.64, and this has
been shown on the balance-sheet as an asset of the University.
The fire insurance has been adjusted during the year on a pro rata basis, so that all
companies with whom insurance is carried are liable for their pro rata share of any loss which
may occur on any or all buildings, equipment, etc.
