To an Order of the House for copies of all correspondence between W. H. Ladner
M.P. P., James Orr, M. P. P., and W. Norman Bole, lYI. P. P., and the Honourable the
Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, respecting the roads between New
Westminster City and Port Moody, and New Westminster City and Vancouver.
By Command.
JNO. ROBSON,
Provincial Secretary.
Provincial Secretary's Office,
21st February, 1887.
Messrs. Ladner, Orr and Bole to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works.
New Westminsteb, 12th July, 1886.
Sie,—We beg to call your attention to the present state of the mail road between New
Westminster and Port Moody, as it is in its present condition dangerous for traffic. As the
trains from and to the East arrive at and depart from Port Moody, it is absolutely necessary
this road should be at once placed in a thorough state of repair. We, therefore, request you to
give such irrstructions as will carry out the above object.
We have, <fec,
(Signed) Wm. H. Ladner,
„ James Ore,
„ W. Norman Bole.
The Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works to Messrs. Ladner, Orr, and Bole.
Victoria, B.C., July 14th, 1886.
Gentlemen,-—I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of
the 12th instant, calling my attention to the present condition of the road between New
Westminster and Port Moody, and requesting that the same may at once be placed in a
thorough state of repair.
I have, &c,
(Signed) Wm. Smithe,
Chief Commissioner oj Lands and Works,
Mr. Orr to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works.
New Westminster, July 19th, 1886.
Sir,—Your acknowledgment of the receipt of a joint application of Messrs. Ladner, Bole,
and myself, dated 12th inst, requesting that the road between New Westminster and Port
Moody be placed in a thorough state of repairs, has been received. I beg to call your attention
to the fact that your letter of the 14th inst. contains no answer to our letter above referred
to. I have, therefore, to request that you will inform me at once whether the necessary repairs
will be made, as the road in question is every day becoming more dangerous for travel.
I have, &c,
(Signed) James Orr, M. P. P.,
New Westminster District. 356 Correspondence—Port Moody Road. 1887
The Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works to Mr. Orr.
Victoria, B.C., July 29th, 1886.
Sir,—I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th instant,
relative to the condition of the road between New Westminster and Port Moody, and asking
to be informed if it is the intention of the Government to have the necessary repairs made at
once.
In reply, I beg to state that Mr. Sprott has been instructed to examine the road in
question, and to have the necessary repairs thereto carried out within certain limits.
I have, &c,
(Signed) Wm Smithe,
Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works.
Mr. Bole to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works.
New Westminster, B.C., 12th October, 1886.
Sir,—I beg to call your attention to the very disgraceful state of the road between the
town of Port Moody and the Railway Station. The road is full of large ruts and holes and
unfit for travel, and foot-passengers are obliged, owing to the want of a foot-walk, to wade
through the rrrucl. As the traffic between New Westminster and Port Moody is very considerable, I think I am justified irr calling your attention to the matter, and hope it will be set
right without delay.
I regret the repairs to the Port Moody Road are of an unsatisfactory and temporary
nature, as already pointed out by me to you, and the most important improvement of all,
namely, the ehange of grade, has been entirely neglected, so that, as soon as the winter rains
commence, the road will become as bad as ever.
The widening of the bridge at the old Government House, Sapperton, appears to have
escaped your attention, and this is an imperative work which, if neglected, may very possibly
result in the loss of human life, as the bridge, in its present state, is highly dangerous. The
adjacent sidewalk should also be moved back, as it at present occupies very nearly the centre
of the road, and between it and the fence there is quite a space, much lower than the sidewalk
itself. Trusting these matters will receive your early attention.
I have, &c,
(Signed) W. Norman Bole.
The Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works to Mr. Bole.
Victoria, B.C., 4th Nov., 1886.
Sir,—Your letter of the 12th ultimo was duly received, but I delayed answering it until
I could do so in the light of a report from one of my own officers.
The inspector has reported to me fully upon the condition of the roads referred to in your
letter, and such action will be taken as may be advisable at this season of the year.
I have, &c,
(Signed) Wm. Smithe,
Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works.
