738 Report of Select Committee on Letter 2651. 1876
REPORT OF SELECT COMMITTEE
ON DISAPPEARANCE OP
LETTER REGISTERED 2651, LANDS & WORKS DEPARTMENT.
Mr. Speaker:
Your Committee appointed to enquire into and report upon the circumstances connected with the disappearance of Letter No. 2,651, Lands and "Works Department, beg
to report as follows:—
The letter, which appears to have been an important one, having been the cause of
the discharge of Mr. Sampson and the discontinuance of work on the Howe Sound Road,
was shown to Messrs. Brown and Morrison by Mr. Beaven on the 20th day of January,
1876, and was placed along with other letters between two sheets of paper, preparatory
to being printed. On the 25th day of January, Mr. Walkem saw the letter and advised
that it should not be printed, but did not interfere further in the matter. All the subordinate Officers in the Lands and Works Department deny having removed the letters
from between the two sheets of paper, where they had been placed by Mr. Beaven,
nevertheless these letters were all found to have been distributed, with the exception of
the letter in question.
Officers of the Lands and Works Department report that it is not unusual for letters
to be lost in that Department, many instances of letters having disappeared having been
enumerated.
No one in the Department appears to be held responsible for the safe keeping of
letters. Duplicate keys are provided, and various persons are in the habit, at various
times, of handling and distributing letters.
Wm. Smithe,
Chairman.
