 52 Vict.
Petition against a Chinese holding a Liquor Licence.
283
PETITION.
To the Honourable the Speaker and Members oj' the Legislative Assembly of the Province oj
British Columbia:
We, the undersigned voters and residents of Lillooet and vicinity, humbly represent to
your Honourable House:—
That in the Town of Lillooet, a Chinaman, Ah Poo by name, sells spirituous liquors by
retail and by bottle, much to the detriment of the health and morality of the youthful residents,
who dare not apply at the hotels for liquors on account of. their juvenility, and we can assure
you that we have often seen children of nine years of age coining out of this house bottle in
hand.
We further wish to state that said house is without the slightest accommodation, being a
darkened room without ventilation.
Also, we desire to impress upon you the fact that there are four licensed houses in Lillooet
besides the Chinaman's, being very sufficient for the size of the place.
We earnestly hope that your Honourable House will take such steps as will put a stop to
this great nuisance.
We would particularly request our two representatives to use their best endeavours to
assist us in the matter.
And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
Lillooet, Jan. 25th, 1889.
