RETURN
To an Order of the House for a Return of all letters and telegrams between the
Government, or other the members of the Executive, and Mr. James Champion, or
other persons, relating to the appointment of Mr. James Champion as Government Mining Engineer.

Obtain from James Champion, Mining Engineer, names of persons to whom I can telegraph
respecting his standing, and let me have your own opinion of him.     Reply by wire.

Champion submits names Doctor Bieber, Mason Street, P. A. Huntington, 45 Fremont
Street, San Francisco; Ex-Senator William George, Grass Valley, California, and says will write
you giving particulars personally. I am insufficiently acquainted to venture opinion. Appears
steady.

of James Champion, Mining Engineer.    Wire result, charging forward.

Huntington reports James Champion as reliable Surveyor and Mining Engineer, with
practical experience in quartz mines. Grass Valley diploma. My private enquiries confirm his
report.    Very trustworthy.    Doctor absent.    My charges ten dollars.    Please remit.

You have been appointed Government Mining Engineer, under aid to Quartz Act.    Letter
by mail.

Sir,—I have the honour to inform you that you have been appointed Government Mining
Engineer under and for the purposes of "An Act to aid the development of Quartz Mines," a
copy of which I enclose.
Under section 5 of the Act your remuneration has to be paid by the companies on whose
property you report.

I feel highly honoured for the appointment of Government Mining Engineer under and
for the purposes of " An Act to aid the development of Quartz Mines."
Having had thirty years of practical experience as a practical Mining Engineer in
England, California, Arizona, and Mexico, I hope to give satisfaction to the Honourable
Minister of Mines, and all other parties concerned.
