RETURN
To an Order of the House for a return of the names of all persons who applied to
purchase lands at Port Simpson in 1879 or 1883; the dates and particulars of the
respective applications; the dates of instructions for surveys; to whom issued;
the dates of surveys; copies of publication (if any) of same; the dates of acceptance of surveys; and the dates of the issue of Crown grants, and to whom issued;
together with copies of all correspondence in relation to the matter.

I hereby give notice that 1 intend to apply for permission to purchase one hundred and
sixty acres of land abutting on Port Simpson, B. C, commencing at a post near high-water
mark, on the north shore, and running northerly, forty chains ; thence easterly, forty chains;
thence southerly, forty chains ; and thence westerly, forty chains, to the place of commencement,
No mining or mineral claims are known to exist in the neighbourhood.
Notice of intention to purchase was posted on the above land on August 4th.

I hereby give notice that I intend to apply for permission to purchase one hundred and

direction, forty chains, to the place of commencement.

The above-named parties did not make any application to purchase the lands.
The survey was made without authority or instruction from the Lands and Works Office.
The survey was commenced  by Mr. Ralph, O.E., April  2nd,  1883,   and  completed May
28th, 1883.

Commissioner of Lands and Works for permission to purchase 160 acres of land, situate at
Port Simpson, B. C, and described as follows :—
Commencing at C. G. Major's north-west corner; thence true-east 24 chains, thence true
north 40 chains, thence true west 60 chains, to the east shore of Port Simpson Harbour;
thence in a south-easterly direction, following the meanderings of the shore line, to the point
of commencement.

Commencing at a stake on the south shore of Port Simpson Harbour, said stake being the
north-east corner of the Indian Reserve ; thence true south for a distance of 58 chains, along
the eastern boundary of the said Indian Reserve ; thence true east for a distance of 30 chains;
thence true north for a distance of 55 chains, to the south shore of Port Simpson Harbour;
thence in a north-westerly direction, following the meanderings of the shore line, to the point
of commencement.

Sir,—Having observed in this morning's " Colonist" an advertisement that the reserve
on lands in the vicinity of Port Simpson has been removed, I beg to refer you to notices published in the B. C. Gazette in August, 1879, and to state that Messrs. Hanington, Croasdaile,
McMicking, and myself desire to purchase the lands described in our respective notices, and
that we propose to employ Mr. Edward Stephens, C.E., to survey the same. Will you be good
enough to approve of Mr. Stephens, and instruct him to make the requisite surveys. The
lands were staked off and notices duly posted in 1879.

attention to a former application, on behalf of Messrs. Hanington, Croasdaile, and others, for
survey of Port Simpson lands, and to inform you, in reply, that it will be necessary for the
department to be furnished with details of the particular lands to which your former letter
alluded. The tracings in this office are at your disposition, if of any assistance to you in
furnishing the required information.
