Chaplain's Report.
Acting for the Rector of Holy Trinity, at present absent in England, I have visited the
Gaol, alternately with the Rev. A. H. Sheldon, on Saturday afternoons during the past year,
and at other times when called for.
With scarcely an exception the prisoners have willingly attended the services, and on
all occasions presented a reverent and attentive demeanour.
Composed, however, chiefly of the class of inveterate drinkers, they are peculiarly hard
to touch, and I grieve to say that the cases of reformation after the expiration of their
sentences are few and far between.
In some instances of repeated conviction, imprisonment has become so much a matter of
course that the sense of punishment seems to be lost, and I am very strongly of opinion that
these cases ought to be exceptionally dealt with.
The workshop is still the only place in which services can be had, and it is as ill-adapted
as ever to the purpose.
I have to acknowledge the courtesy of all the officials invariably.
A. W. New Westminster.
