A noticeable change in mining con
tlitions in llie Slocan is no'-v reported
i:. the papers published i.i that vicinity. Hitherto the extensive ptoduccrs
havo generally been mini:: owned by
companies which ha.-e expended cen*
siderable capital on their development
nod it has been necessary in order
for their production to be remuncra
iii", for it to be made on a largo scale.
The margin of profit over freighl
umi treatment rates hitherto prevailing was so small that -t large tonnage
was essential to any considerable pro*
fit*makiug,
The change in question is principal
ly l.iouglit about by reductions in
iates, but otbor factors are the had
bounty and the increased price of lead
inni silver. A greater inurgin of profit has enabled the leaser, of little or
no capital, to take the field and specu
une on his time and energy. He can
mine and ship ore from ihe smaller
' and less known properties at a rale
which gives him a fair profit over and
above wages to himself and partnors*
At the present moment a large num*
her of practical miners are working
properties on lease and mailing fair
profits.
