tOGAL AND MINING NEWS FROM ADJACENT TOWNS AND CAMPS. Special to The Tribune Silverton, May 20.Recent development work on the Lone Star group has resulted in another find of considerable importance. A shaft has been sunk on the ledge on this property, a tunnel driven eighty feet and several open cuts made, in till of which clean ore has been exposed. Tlie ledge has been worked on tor 200 feet iind galena shown the entire length. The paystreak varies from two to live inches and assay returns on the surface ore give LOO ounces silver and seventy per cent lead. The owners, all local men, are highly pleased tit the result of tlieir work on tlie ground. Tlio group is composed of the Lone Star iind the Rejected claims and the working all within (iOO yards of the town limits. Another galena bearing ledge has been uncovered at the Queen Fraction, .about .'300 feet from the recent discovery. No work, however, will be done at this point for some time, the owners beiug determined to test their first strike. A tunnel is being driven on the ledge and the showing in tho face is excellent. Assurances have been given to the celebration commit... that not less than ten teams are to enter the double hand drilling contest, llos.sla.nd, Ymir, Slocan City, Tliree Forks and Sandon will enter teams, besides the local contestants. Telegrams have been received from outside horsemen announcing the shipment of their horses and asking for stable room. 11 seems to be a settled question that the miners at work here will insist on a $3.50 wage. A walkout can be expected. Already men have refused to go to work jit mines where the notice calling for miners at $3 per shift has been posted. Another football match will be 'played here on Sunday. The Slocan City players are endeavoring to charter the steamer to come here and compete and if they cannot make this arrangement two local teams will play. New Denver has refused to meet the local team on a Sunday. Rossland. Rossland, May 20.II. A. Honeyford, --.Tames O. Palmer, Thomas Neville, W. F. Schofield and Mike Cook got on tlie skip in the main shaft of the War Eagle mine this morning to be transferred .from one level to another. At the 250-foot level the skip got away from the control of the engineer and fell to the 000-foot level. THE FIGHT GOES MERRILY BETWEEN RIVAL RAILWAYS. Thero they 1: are three claims in the group, jind avc beeu located since LSS.5. They are on the north side of the creek, and about opposite the Neepawa. There are two veins running through the property from the Oregon City claim, which takes in the -valley. One of the veinsthe main one- iS ten feet in width, and carries a heavy oxide covering, with quart/, the full width. This is freely sprinkled with zinc and galena-, carrying inedcrate Values. It hits been proven that the ledge carries the full length on the gr up, trending slightly oast of north and west of south. A number of open cuts have been run on the ledge, besides a tunnel in close to fifty feet. Good trails have been built, connecting with the wagon road. Tho property is most advantageously situated, with splendid water power and timber. The smaller vein, about 400 feet west and running parallel with the big lead, hits not been touched as yet, though the indications are good. Manitoba parties, .Avith A. Brindle of New Denver and G. D. Scott of 'Victoria, are the principal owners. Further development of the group will be commenced in a few days, at a much greater depth on the vein. The Oregon City just below the Fairy Queen group, is owned chiefly by L. Parkinson, C. Trumbull and S. Boswell of Kaslo. There is a good cabin and two blacksmith shops on the claim. Considerable work has been done, almost entirely on the smaller A'ein. The first tun-' nel is in about 200 feet, having cut the apex of the ore chute ; while No. 2 is in over 100 feet, but not quite to the ore body showing above. The ore is galena, carrying a heavy combination of iron pyrites and copper. The values in silver*, lead, copper and gold are fair. The last work done was on the larger vein, aud the commencement made of what will be the main tunnel, as it is believed this will yet be the chief mineral carrier. Numerous seams of mineral cross-section the Oregon City and it should make a shipping mine. The principal thing that is being discussed throughout the district is tlie early, enforcement of the eight-hour law. On the question of $3 or $8.50 Wages for the eight-hour shift, opinion is pretty erVouly divided as to which- it should be* but the general opinion is that the miners aviII accept* the $3 a day and continue 'working in their present positions. Preparations for the celebration are still going on, and everything is almost ready foi- the day. It is assured that Kaslo Avill have her usual big crowd present, and it is probable; that there will be more people iu Kaslo than there ever, was; There will be three contestants for the hose reel race, Sandon, Nelson aud Kaslo, the same teams that met last year. The contest promises to be a most exciting one. Kaslo has a better team than she ever had, aud AA'ill make a big effort to keep the first prize, at home. Sandon has been practicing hard, and report says they haA-e made remarkably fast time, and Nelson, A\'ho has entered at the eleventh hour, Avill need their best men if they Avish to- retain their laurels. Manila, 3lay 20.The Filipino commissioners called on major general Otis this afternoon iind .arranged to meet the members of the American commission on Monday, Avhen they expect their colleagues will have arrived. The chairman iind secretary of their commission have been chosen. Major general Otis has declined to recognize the rebels to the extent of agreeing to an armistice, but he has notified the American commanders to refrain: temporarily from aggressiA'e action. He is in it position to resume hostilities any time. This Avill defeat any subterfuge to gain time, which Avould not be there if the general agreed to an armistice. The Filipino are so deceptive that people Avould hesitate to credit Avith good faith tlieir latest overtures. More attention is iioav paid to them than avjis .paid to their previous advances, hoAvever. The Filipino commission is acting under instructions from Aguinaldo and the congress, but it is possible that if peace is arranged, generals Luna and Pio del Pilar aud their followers will continue a guerilla Avarfare. At Iloilo an attack on the'Americans was recently expected, The Filipino leader boasted he had 2,000 riflemen and 10,- 000 bolamen, and sent an ultimatum to the American commander ordering him to leaAre the island. An army of natives left the toAvn and, after seA'eral days, the outposts Avere doubled; in addition, the Yorktown aud the Iris were anchored in positions commanding the mouth of Jura riA'er, Avhere the attack A\*as expected to take place, but it-failed to materialize. The Filipino junta at Hong Kong has cabled the Loudon office of the Associated Press saying it is untrue that general Luna is Avouuded or has surrendered, contradicting the report tliat general Montenegro is dead, and announcing that the difficulty between Luna and Mascado is settled. The dispatch adds that the opinion jire vails in Manila that the peace ne- gotiationsihave. failedv beeivuseanajpr geiiY* ^rftlfQ-foSiiJ^ It*;\Vi.*|fJ*d_;tltei)'slate:dj _v_(VeoTiicreVeti'a-iitf-', jifjc'-itu^^^ 'JthlvMheiPilifSlhAS- wMilcll i-dut ii it. *t lb _,*-ig_i-.'"_ fUQjby^tlie-ij. flghtSY Were i'eqognl55ed,J and AVoul4^.Ppeai Ipr.;the= "Aliijerieaii peppfe to help jijieiii.pbtaiii the|r natural _uu<li'eas- ' oiiable ^.pii'aiiOiis. - . - SCHOOL TRUSTEES HAVE AGAINST A SNAG. RUN A special meeting of the Nelson board of school trustees A\*ns held last night, iu the office of Dr. '!_. C. Arthur to consider and take action in regard to the following letter receiA'ed from the department of education iu reply to a letter written by the secretary informing the department that, the two lower rooms in the school would be closed on May 1st owing to overcrowding: VICTORIA, liny lCth, 1S!K). To K. C. Arthur, Secretary Board of School Trustees, Nelson. Dear Sir: Yours of Die lOtli instant lias been duly received. Tlie Avork of completing and furnishing tlio second story of your schoolhouse Jibs already been un 'er- taken by tho Lands and AVorks depa- tin out. The rooms will bo ready for occupation before they will be required in August next. As to the overcrowded condition of the lower rooms, 1 would point out that when I aulhorized your principal to rc-adjust the attendance by promotion, I had in view not only the lower rooms, but the lirsi. division, with an average attendance for April, as well as tho second division, wilh an average attendance of 31 for tho same month. I may add that had the suggestion of this department to relieve the overcrowding in the Nelson school cither by promotion or the half-day system, as tho judgment of the principal dictated, been carried out, the board could not, on tlio ground of overcrowding, and consequent danger to health, have found any excuse or justification whatever for the closing of tlie two lowest divisions. But as your board has seen lit to disregard suggestions (which arc reasonable and had already been adopted to meet a similar difliculty else- whore) and has closed the fourth and fifth divisions, this department decided that under the circumstances it i would not be justified in paying salaries to teachers for ! services not rendered. In consequence of this decision Miss V\ ickham and Mrs. Pearey, the teachers of the fourth and lit'li divisions, respectively, were informed- that salary would cease in case these divisions were closed by the trustees. In conclusion, permit mc to state that while the department views with regret tlio hasty action of the Nelson board in thus depriving for a time so many children of school facilities, it cannot but conclude that tho trustees are I he persons most intimately concerned. Yours truly ALEXANDER ROBINSON, Superintendent of Kducatiou. After discussing the situation the board decided to re-open the'fourth and fifth departments ou Monday next and rearrange the classes so that the pupils iu rooms three, four and five Avill be:diVided jntOjtAvo pa-tsJ4_6ne,_tQ ..atte.n'cr.schQol.- in._ ^0$&fpnd(k$ audM^pilhkf %Ml0o^rt |ob^|3j|_ r, $fe 7^?i^_J^|fc||^ commission shows that they believe commission means business." this GOOD NEWS FE01W AINSWOE,TH. cU-visioh^ should, hro.'i_QWp.nijg'sJ^.e_Ujs,Qllle*ft, The trustees chlifly'tliitt _vyfch the, ad"*- LOCAL NEWS AND GOSSIP. That this is to be a white season is now sufliciently demonstrated, for among all the beautiful and -artistic' productions which come from the different centers whence fashion sends out her edicts, white gowns, white'-'hats,, white accessories predominated ami it seems the one .paramount ambition and desire of dressmakers and milliners to heighten this white effect by the most ravishing combinations of materials and garnitures. The show windows of Fred Irvine & Co. beai'-this out. Rev. Mr, Irwin of Kossland arrived in Nolson liist night. He reports that "Mike" Cork, one of the men reported seriously injured in the War Eagle mine accident, Avas on the streets apparently in no worse condition than after tho recent football game at Nelson, in which he played as one of the Rossland-team.' This is gratifying neAvs -to Mr. Cork's friends in Nelson. It Avas reported last night that EdAvard Murphy, brother-in-law of Horace D. Hume, has received his appointment as mining recorder for the Gojit River mining division. G. Iv. Tackabury, William and Thomas Duncan purchased yesterday three lots at the southwest corner of Latimer and Hall streets from D. Darraugli aud George Dickson for $2000. The>sales were negotiated by J. E. Amiable. Tames Lawrence, manager of the Lawrence Hardware Company, returned last niglit from a three Aveeks'visit to Winnipeg, accompanied by his father,-Rev. James LaAvrenee, iwstor of the Presbyterian church at Stoney Mountain, who Avill spend the summer in Nelson. David Church, a miner employed in the Ymir. mine, Avas brought to the. Kootenay Lake General Hospital yesterday suffering, from a* broken forearm. The accident Avas caused by a loose rock falling on him Avhile at work.-- As a result of the injunctions granted restraining the Kaslo & Lardo-Duncan and the Arrowhead & Kootenay raihvuys from constructing their lines of raihA'ay through the Duncan City pass, the rival roads have kept outside the neighborhood of the pass; but in all other respects tlie fight between them is still on, and there is plenty of work offering for men at $2.;.0 per day. It is generally understood that nothing further will be done by the ri\*al roads until after the injunction restraining the Arrowhead <fc Kootenay Railway Company expires, but in the meantime both companies are getting evidence ready for the legal fight in the courts, and it mass of conflicting evidence from different engineers may be expected. The construction headquarters of the Arrowhead & Kootenay, or Canadian Pacific company, is at Lardo, and that of the Kaslo fc Lardo-Duncan is at Argenta. Lots in each of the toAvnsites are selling well,'and an old-time Kootenay toAvnsite boom is on in both places. The busiest man in the Lardo toAvnsite is Archie Fletcher, avIio has his coat off putting up a neAV hotel. At Duncan City another illustration is being giA'en of the bad feeling betAveen the rival raihvay companies, Avhere it is said the Kaslo & Lardo-Duncan company is building a trestle across the ArroAvhead & Kootenay company's, grade, completely blocking the same. MONEY OR MORALS? -- Yiiiir. ~ Ymir, May 20. It Avas decided at the meeting last night to fornl a baseball club in Yinir. The foIloAving officers Avere*. appointed: 13. The baseball ground is being put in thorough order for the queen's birthday, and practices tire held every af teriioon in order to give the Saline? team a,-warm reception. Tliere are about twenty-five members already, and more will be enrolled. Tlie Waterworks company is doing excellent work;- the substantia-.res? ervoir is .almost completed, Avhieh will have a capacity of 50,000 gallons; the drains are being dug for the main six- inch pipe, which will be 8000 feet long; the flume from the dam to the reservou4 is ten inches by twelve inches and 177 feet long, which cajl ahvays be kept fioAV- ing full to its utmost -capacity from the magnificent stream of Quartz creek. The pipes, hydrants, etc., are on their Avay from Chicago and expected here any day. A strong force of meu are being employed, but so constantly are they subject to the attacks of insects and mosquitoes in the forest that the Avearing of A'eils has been resorted to. This morning Findtay McLeod, Henry Jackson and Archie McDougall left Avith supplies to develop their properties tip Wild Horse creek. Mr. and Mrs. AndreAv Cairns are back after a protracted visit to Europe, and haA'e taken up their residence iu their old home. Harold Gird- Avood is in Ymir looking up his many interests.
