Il is-"~roportod that several properties < on-?Whitelish crook will be operated the. cumins; winter. The Tiger-Poorman group of mines, located on the bheep creek divide, will be developed this winter. A good deal of development work has been done on proper- lies located on Wasa, Wolf and Tracy creeks during the past summer. Fred Hazen has been nl work .continuously during the past iwo months developing tin: , Graphite. , There, is a line showing of galena in Ihis tunnel. In ahout, litteon days lhe St. < Eugene will be operated by a full force. The temporary hoist will be completed by that time. Mr. .Smith-brought in snnm fine samples of copper ore from Whitofish creek this week. Gold' mining - iir'fSoutheast Kootenay . is- . gaining, ground every year. New finds are being made, and old abandoned placer properties are-being-worked. Chinamen who have leased the Nip anil Tuck placer ground on Wild Horse creek have lately had a'clean-up.which was.very .satisfactory. The'workings at the ,Nip and Tuck are at present in fine condition for work,,and this season's clean-up'has proved that t.he ground is rich, and it is expected that next, year a still lar-' eer result will be obtained. A copper'property on White- fish creek is being developed by n Rossland syndicate. It is reported that work will bo continued during the winter. " . Eastern capitalists are seeking an option on a Perry Creek, free- gold' property. , ' , Prospecting work on tho North Star mine continues. On the Stem winder a small force are engaged in .''drifting on the ledge recently discovered. Considering the amount of work done, and the output, of the shipping mines, it is S!lle ' sai' that no section oi British Columbia gives such promise of high- grade ore, silver-lead and copper, ns that of Southeast Kootenay district. , The Marysville smelter has determined to install lleberlein roasters to equal the capacity ol" its plant. This >s expected to work a savin" of nearly *a a ton on the ore treated. The second stack of the smelter will not be blownin until next summer. The gold output of the Rami for August is estimated at. 4:!.").000 ounces? ,This is worth $0.0:il,'jr>0 In August, HUM. the output was #0,(5*W,:M'i. Tins year breaks all records. Copper refined in Canada, is now being sent forward to China to be used in connection wiih iho coinage of Hint country. This is probably the result, of the American boycott in China. One shipment of 100,t)00 pounds of copper bas just been sent from Montreal to China, and other shipments are to follow. Mark Shilling came down from
Perry Creek Saturday last on
business. „
that a jii'ominent business man
of that town recently returned
from Calgary and stated that he
had learned there on good authority that a party of C. P. R
surveyors had orders to come
here shortly and run a locating
line of the Kootenay Central
Railway, crossing the-Columbia
river near' Firlands and continuing on the west side up the Windermere lake. This rumor at
lirst was received as another
joke, but as the name of the man
has been given out from whom
it is said to emanate it is being
more seriously considered. The
rumor can do no harm and it
may serve to revive a subject already much discussed.—Wilmer

The Upper Columbia and Upper Kootenay Valleys are now
open to the world and are today
vast store houses of riches. The
men who are far-sighted enough
to invest here now will "sure"
be rewarded. Thousands of men
will find profitable employment
in this territory during the next
few years, and hundreds ,will
make fortunes. Great mines will
be opened and many towns will
be born aud increase in size.
The great population that .will
fill these valleys from Golden to
Cranbrook will create a growing
market for land produce and
every liueof manufacture.—Wil-
