Wireless telegraphy Wll be established from the Atlantic to 200 SQUARE Ml LIOS OF COAL. ' The Canadian Pacitic Railway Company, has had'a party of explorers and surveyors''-in the Flathead valley during the past summer locating large areas of coal, and making,.surveys for a branch line from different points on the Crow*sr Nest lino to the coal fields. A preliminary line has" been run ' from the Morrisse'y. coal fields, inn, south ea'storly direction down a tribulary of Lodge Pole creek, 'thence east lo the headwaters of the Flathead river. ri * Another trial line has boon"run from a .point on the Crow's Nest branch railway, near Elko, south do'wii the Wigwam ,river, thence north and'oast to the Flathead. The objective point- oi' these trial lines is the immense coal areas of the Flathead valley. , Tho explorers of the company have discovered large seams of coal near the headwaters of Lodge Pole creek, on the 50,000 acres of Dominion coal land. i The quality of the coal is said to be the same as. that found on' Morrissoy crook. Between Lodge Pole creek and the headwaters of the Flathead rivej-. the explorers have discovered some 2 seams of workable coal varying from four to thirty i'eet in thickness. At tho point of discovery of these seams, workmen have run open cuts, and faced off the seams, ready for taking out coal as soon as the necessary means of transportation is afforded by the con struction of branch lines in the Plat head". Seven other workable cseams have been discovered, and faced up. similar to the above ii? seams south and east of Lodge Pole creclc. The district where these large bodies of coal have been discovered lies on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, near the North Kootenay Pass, an old lime pack, trail much used by tiie Tndians, entering the district from''Alberta. " In addition to the coal--seam's located by the Canadian .Pacific Company, a large area, covering a territory of nearly .L'i'O square miles has been'located, and coal .found' iipoirovory location, dour onstrnfmg the fact thai'I lie coal areas Of Southeast Koolenay are of 'vast extent; nor.n qi-akt/. propositions. r,\ViId Horse creek has been a constant and large gold producer since the early days in 1,he sixties. 'The. shallow placer mines in the beds and bars of the creek* were very rich, and the dee]) hydraulic gravel bars have been in active operation since ISO-l. On Wild Horse creek and ii.-s tributaries, a-large number of quartz properties have been located. With a7sm;ill amount of development, and ~- cheap and efficient means of transportation a^onsiderable number of,properties" would boc7>me'i**rge aifd constant producers'. On Victoria Gulch are located the Kootenay King and, Watson' claims, which have beeii systematically opened, showing up a ;")Oefoot vein.of galena ore which, when concentrated, will carry values exceeding $100 per ton. Still Turther north,' on the divide between Sheep creek and the north fork- oT Wild Horse l creek are the Tigor-Poorman group of mines. It has'a varying ledge, from three to six feet in width and most of the rock in the vein will pay from .^aO to SflOO iii,'gold, copper and lead. It is. the intention of the owner, Mr. John P. Larson, lo work the property during the present winter. On the east 'bank of Wild Horse creek., about . five miles from the- town of Fort Steele. are located the Dardenelles and Tit for Tat group of mines. Both'groups have boon more or less developed to an extent that proves that tho mines only need capital to thoroughly open them to become great gold producers. The Tit for Tat group: has recently been'bonded for tfiiOjOOO. and if is reported that, the Dardanelles will also go to the same parties, an eastern syndicate for (>r>,000. Oh tho opposite side of the creek, the Bald Mountain is under bond for ^In.000. rt is expected that-the coming year will see these bonded pro- pcrtics in active operation employing a large number of men. and prove to be among the paying free-gold mines of the Province. Owing to the depression of the big silver-lead mines of the district, the free-gold camps of Wild.Horse and Perry creeks,, will come into greater prominence, and add another monument lo the miningc industry oi" Southeast Kootenay. ing active operations early next spring. A sawmill will be installed, and lumber cut for buildings, flumes, etc. A small force is engaged at present in clearing ofi* large areas of bench era vol for hydraulic operations. ' The Thompson Company have installed a pumping and hoisting plant, and with a small force are drifting on bedrock at a clepth of mi,feel. Work has been necessarily slow owing to tho large amount of water' handled, and the Heavy burden of timbering. While this property has 0)paid well in the past, it i.s expected that a better showing .will be made as the funnel is advanced. Quartz mining at Perry crook is-rapidly-developing into a-most important ,indiistry, and' indeed it may be said with truth that so far development has proved large deposits of free gold ore in the immediate viciiiify of'Perry creek-. ' At the Roaring King group of mines, .winter quarters have, been erected, and a small force will be'actively employed during Ihe present winter, in developing ihe property. ' On the different veins, throe or more, which traverse the Perry crook camp, are, located some forty claims, some of which have boon extensively prospected and considered very" promising for developing into paying properties. but unfortunately the owners have not ,fhe means to open them up. Taken all together,,, the mining .outlook is' very-, flattering, and without- doubt, next year will see a 'mining revival on Perry creek.,, COAL AND PETROLEUM. The coal 'fields of the Crow's Nest Pass have acquired a world wide reputation bq,th on account of the quality and quantity extracted, and are without doubt the host coal fields on the American Continent.
