V i Vol. 9. BORT STBBBB, B. C, SATURDAY, MARCH 14-, 1908. No 11. * Oi tfa \ti \ii \ii \ki it. t \il Of Or - MINES AND MINING. Conducted under the nuspices oi.tlie Fort Stoolo Miners' Association. .IAS. .AllUiAW. II. W. KoSS. Sec. issued the circular seems 1o,have Ibeeii to ?bring pressure to bear upon the government to remove |.the i'per cenl tax on output of mines, aud emiql ;t law giving I crown grants'to placer properties Southeast Kootenay as a Smelting Center. Pew mining section's enjoy the advantages and opportunities I'oi^suceessful smelter operations as does Southeast Koolenay. Successful ore- reduction must have cheap I'uol and such ;t variety of ores as to be self-fluxing: This is why largo reduction 'works have in many instances .i,nni,-nEioi-iiialiiiil :it,nointsre-- mole from mines. A- groat variety of ores are needed to insure fluxing .charges containing values. These, are seldom found iii one locality, and in most instances ores wore drawn from groat distances to smelters near the supply of fuel. A few years ago the people of Rutlo hailed with delight fhe advent of the 'Northern Pacific railroad because they could ship ' lite ores of their mines to seaboard and thence to Swansea Wales. The Coour d'Alcnes today, by reason of-having but one class'of ore, ship their product to Omaha. Denver and points ' east ,of the Missouri river. liy ihe, development of coal in Monlana'the smelting situation has (-hanged and great/ prosperity to' the mining industry has come as a rosu.lt. , - . ,, Until" recent years tho charges for smelting varied from Si0.00 to &KUI0 per ton. Coupled to this were 'transportation charges of an ecpial amount. Those penalties naturally rendered unprofitable anything but the highest grade ores. In'this rospect the Kootenays enjoy unusual advantages. Ores are reduced, at less cost in West Kootenay than any other place in the world: in some instances as low "as :;..">U per Ion Several condition.-- conlributC'to this result, but to the cheapness of-colco may be given the greatest credit. The largest item of cost, however, is the transport til ion of coke.' This coke is shipped from East Kootenay, and with tho "cost of transportation oliminatcd and other conditions being c<|nal it is plain thai Southeast Kootenay offers an inviting Held for the successful , opcralion of smelters and ore-redact ion works. In' I ho midst of the metal mines is the largest area of tho best coking coal in the world: and, as to the other conditions., they are all that, can be desired. In the matter of Muxes they are all- at hand. In most instances lliey are contained in fhe ores, and where not, they exist in abundance in tho locality Climate and walerpower are going to waste, whose use some day will work marvels iu our midst. These latent resources only need the touch of the industrial genius .to transform them into sources of great wealth. Smelting as a Business. No business has paid Ihe promts on the capital invested -as has the business of smelting. Tlie Boston and . Colorado Smelting Company, of Argo, noar Denver, Col.; started with a small capital a few years ago, and has paid- since then, dividends on $1,250,000. I The. Grant .-Smelting .Company commenced with a-capital of Si00,0011, and it is now paying dividends on $:',,000,o0(). The Kansas City Smelting Company commenced wil.li a comparatively small capital, and it is paying dividends upon, several millions of stock. , About fifteen other such establishments have grown up in the w'ost, in the last twenty years and have been making money at an iinusual rate. The reason for this is not far to find. A custom' smelter bears fhe same relation to the mining commnnity'that a well-conducted bank does to the business of'a town; except, perhaps, the public knows less of the secrets of its vast profits. It is the mineral broker through which the wealth of the mines, "pass, at whatever margin il wishes'to exact. In many instances only enough has been left the miner to allow him to work his mine. Smelting companies that do a strictly custom business show unquestionably, for the amount invested; thor largest profits of any .industry in America. There are instances of capital iiivosted_ in- smelting companies being" turned fi\;e times in one year, and each iiine the: margin has boon twenty per centP of the amount handled. . ' '< : .A"smelter assumes no risk. It simply buys ores at a greatly reduced value, then attaches all sorls of penalties for smelting: deducting for moisture,- assumed loss of values in reduction,1 discounts and commissions for marketing bullion etc. Yet, notwithstanding all those drawbacks the mining industry has grown out of all proportion to sin ell ing. This i.s especially the case in localities not favorably situated for the operation of smelters. Tho essential qualities for a smelter situation, are cheap fuel, diversied char- actors of ore and diverging lines of railroads. These things aro rapidly assuming shape in Southeast Koolcnav. Industrial Notes. Rcoenlly a twenty-four dollar nugget was picked up in , the sluice-box of the Thompson shaft on- Perry creek. The Kootenay, Placer Mining Company on Perry creek, has purchased .from Nils l-Janson a sawmill to be set up near its property, to equip the mine with Humes and buildings. The mill was hauled to the mine during the week. - , Oplion to purchase has been DISTRICT NEWS NOTES. The .advance iu the price of cad is put ting a new aspect upon' the mining' sit tuition, which is likely io stimulate all branches of the industry, but if is probable tint it will be some time bo- fore ii}jMl'eet will be felt. Some time ago the management of the St. Eugene stated that it would not resume operations until lead, reached \3 pounds. This does not "iii^an. however, that, the government be urged to resist to the inmost ihe said claims of C.P.R. in the'Elk River valley. Among the other important government measures will be a .bill providing for a railway commission, and a bill providing for the settlement of sfr kes by arbitration. ,The Alaska boundary affair will also be'one of the important matters of discussion.
