C, SATURDAY, JULY S, 1905, No. 28. t THE MARYSVILLE SMELTER The Hebsrlein Process of Smelt- ' incr is a Pronounced Success. I n speaking ol the success ol the llcberlcin process at the Marysville smeller, the Nelson Tribune says: Probably the most iinportanl news that has reached Kootenay i'or many a day i.s that the ifeborloin process ' at Marysville smeller is a' pronounced success. It has now been running several weeks, and has done all lhat was asked or expected ol" ii. '.lusi what 'Ibis involves can hardly bo realized. _. but il "means at least thai there i.s an actual, saving ol' ?."> :i ton in the trea.tinciib.ol silver-lead ores of a certain grade, and the'other load .smelters in the Kootenay will ha vo to adopt the process, and that the produeer should benelit to the extent of &l a ton on a IjU per cent lead ore or con- ctnitrale. We imagine this will do more than tax or tariff legislation to stifle'"the complaints of load ore miners,'and by solving tl.ie pToblem of cheap treatment it should stimulate/production to an extent, hitherto unknown in the Slogan. ".Just, how this economic problem has been solved may be gaihorod from the fact that the Heberlcin process , x'. a direct, as compared with an indirect one. 'dt does not produce inatle, as in the ordinary process, which then has tto be treated again, but ils lirst product is bullion, which only needs running. In ihe, ..process ' of roasting all impurities are elim- o '* ' ' inated, the ore. being lirst crushed, in the roaster it is rendered viscous aud the sulphur passes ' oil", so that by the lime the ore roaches tho load stack and the blast is applied, nothing remains but to consolidate it inlo metal. The doing away with the intermediate process ol treating matte ol feels the saving already speciiied. The most careful assays ol the slag at Marysville show that all the silver values have been recovered in the furnace, ihe slag contained practically nothing. Another lead stack to treat customs ore has been started. It is understood the management of both Trail and Hall mines smelters have been walchmg the development of the lleberlein process lor a long time. They realized that, if il proved a success al Marysville they would have to adopt it, and only wailed I'or proof of its efticieiicy before doing so. The cost of installation al the local smelter would be between M).()i>0 and SIOO.OOO. a considerable sum and one which the management would not have been justified in asking lor until the absolute success of the process had been demoiistraled. Now thai this lias boon achieved, we may hope to learn before .many, months have passed;.'; lhal all lliu lead smelters'. iti British': Columbia have foi lowed, suit, and that the lead inining industry has taken 011 a how lease of 1 i fo. The Nelson team played as hard as they knew how; the juniors honored by lli'eii" presence on the team, did llieir best to justify their, proseneo, and elicited the applause of rlho spectators. Nelson and the air was rent by the shoals of the Nclsonitos who scarcely hoped to see their 'team in Ihe lead. Cranbrook did its best to e\'on up the score, but for the remainder of the quarter Nelson defended its goal so well that their best combination failed. In combination, however the visitors were decidedly the stronger Towards the end of the second quarter. Joe Thompson, who had been playing a great game, slipped on the dam]) grass and sprained his ankle, aud it was feared would be out of the game. But when the referee's whistle called the players on to the field for the third quarter, Joe was among theni, the spirits of the Nelson rooters began to.soar, and Joe was given an ovation. The pace was furiously set in the beginning of the third quarter and the weight of the Cranbrook men began to Loll and after six minutes of play. Black, by a dexterously managed shot, secured a second-goal for Cran- b rook, evening t lie score. The knowledge that (lie game depended upon their unfailing exertions spurred by the; prediction,' made in Cranbrook. that Nelson would be oyerwhel m ingly defeated, heartened the hoineteain and thoy put i'lji grand game and within two minutes of- time scored the, third goal, Perrier making the shot after a fast, "run and some good passing;'. The last quarter was tlu?s.entered upon, w.ifh three goals to two in Nelson's favor..and a do-' {(M'lhined effort was made to increase the dead. Within four minutes -MeCulloeh again succeeded in scoring for his side and'at last Nelson had a lea( lwo scores arid the game looked sa'('".. But the . tea-ii'i was' tired, the superior physical abilities of their opponents, safe catches and good runners, began to tell, and there, .was, little surprise when Cranbrook scored a third goal, shot by Patton; time one minute. Still Nelson had a lead of one aud ten minutes loft in which to defend their goal. ,An error on the part of Clothier helped them and the evening up of the score was kept away for eight of those leu minutes, although minute by minute it was seen that the Nelson team was getting played out: I hey \vore no longer able to adequately cover their men, pass after pass was made without a man in the green And white being on ihe spot lo check' h,is covei.
