A Thrilling Climb.  Last Sunday one of the most  thrilling climbs ever n.ade in B.  C. was undertaken to the cave  on llosmer 'mountain by Messrs  Forsyth, Baldrey, Volume,'  Miller.- O'Noil, Slenunou, and  Oleudeiining. The .ilart was  made from Pernio at -I a. m. and  the party returned at 7.30 p. in.  Many people have tried to reach  the  cave  and   failed      Forsyth  return from the coast. A number of citizens were on hand  upon the arrival of the special  train, who extended the courtesies of the city to the visitors,  but owing to the lack of time the  newspaper men were unable to  accept the invitation and see the  town and other places of interest  in this vicinity. The lead ore market has certainly been very steady during  Ihe half'year just closed. Tho  ��vear opened with this mineral at  *aS per ton and has remained  around this price very closely  all the. tune.   '  A Pittsburg firm has been  awarded tho contract for the  erection of tbe new coal tipple  for Ihe Canadian Northern Railway Coal company *'t Forme,  British Columbia. The structure will be entirely of steel,  tilted in tho factory, and the material will weigh over 800 tons.  It will bo 30 feet, wide, will "'extend across the valley a distance  of 900 feet, and will have a. capacity for 4,000 tons' per day. It  will be fitted vvith all tho latest  tipple machinery; and when completed will cost ��170,000.  The Intermediates Organize. A warrant  was issued, which'was placed in  the hands of Constable Morris  of Cranbrook, and telegrams  for his arrest sent to every available point in the district. Upon  receipt of the telegram Gill was  arrested at, Elko. c but later, on  succeeded in making his escape  and crossed the line at Tobacco  Plains. Monday, July 3rd. was payday  at ihe mine, and the company  distributed a little over 828,000.  There are about 300 men on the  payroll.  The machinery for the new 30  drill air  compressor is being installed   as   rapidly  as  possible,  and a big etl'ort   will be made to  have   il   running  by the first of  August.    Tho company is behind  with development work,  and as  soon'as this   machinery is ready  to run,   an   additional  one   hundred   men   will   bo  put to work. CRANBROOK.' B.C.  ORANGEMEN CELEBRATE  At  Church   On   Sunday���Parade  and Banquet on Wednesday  '    July 12th.  Last Sunday morning the members of tho local Lodge of Orangemen marched in order to the  Methodist Church whore an appropriate service was conducted.  This is the first anniversary of  the lodge in this place and was  well attended. On Weduesday  evening at 7-30 the usual parade  The  feet  was held when   a   large   number  ed  extradition   proceedings and  marched  through   the   different  returned with the officers with-  out 'further trouble. He was  taken to Fernie where ho was  placed "in jail to await a preliminary hearing on a charge of  embez/Jemont.  Since Mr Gill's attempted  escape it is said that his short  age will amount lo 81,800, and  that tho books containing his  discrepancies aro missing, that,  they have been cached or destroyed.  There was considerable sympathy expressed, at first, for Mr,  Gill on account of his family,  but his actions since the discovery of his shortage, and,, his  attempt to escape during'Mr.  Bakers absence he has forfeited  the confidence of all his  friends.  "Mother" Goes to Portland.  A dinner was given last. Wednesday evening at, the Canadian  Bank of Commerce mess-room to  bid "so long" to J. A. Motherwell, wlio loft for Portland  ou Thursday whore he will act  as accountant for the branch of  tho Canadian Hank of Commerce  in, that city. Mr. Motherwell  has been in Cranbrook three  years and no"Bank Boy" was  more respected and liked than  "Mother". He leaves a lot of  friends behind who wish him  every prosperity in the new field  of usefulness. -  Baseball at Cranbrook.  Mr.   B.  J.   Kelly,   of Nelson,  streets led by tho strains from  tbe bag-pipes furnished by Mr.  McCowan. At 9 o'clock all  marched to ''The AVilga" where  a sumptious repast, had been  laid, prepared by Mr. Hoadly.  The order is to bo congratulated  on the success of the undertaking not only as regards the numbers but also the extensiveuess  of the programme .and the en  thusiasm manifested. After all  had satisfied tho wants of the  inner man an interestiua' programme was rondo rod consisting  of songs and after-dinner  speeches. Rev. J. P. Wosltnan  was,asked to take the chair. He  responded and , i in rii ed lately proposed tlie toast to the King. The  request was complied with and  alb joined in singing "God Save  the King'.'. At ihe conclusion of the'programme .all joined in singing  "Auld Lang Syne", and all went  home feeliug that tbe eveuing of  and Baldrey claimed to have succeeded last fall but their words  wore doubted until Sunday proof  was found ��� that they had got  there as slated. The party on  Sunday , hung a white cotton  banner across the cave,  cave i.s 00 feet wide, 90  high and 100 feet long. The  last 200 feet of tho climb was a  feat that few would care to try.  It was around tlie mountain on  a little narrow self of rock which  required groat caro as a false step  meant certain death on the jagged rocks far below. Photos  were taken of thocave, but some  of tho party would not repeat  tho trip for ��100 a minute. Tho  supense has too tearing an effect  on the nerves.���Fornie Ledge.  MARYSVILLE ��� THE  .    ��� CITY.  SMELTER  Town1 Lots Are Now on the  Market���New Furnace About  Completed.  Among the Craft.  Tbe regular monthly convocation of Rocky Mountain Chapter R. A. M. was held al Masonic  IIall Cranbrook Tuesday evening.  There was a fairly good attendance, a number of sojourning  companions from Fornio and Sirdar being present. After tho  business of the evening was concluded, the companions and visitors adjourned to the spacious  dining room of the Cosmopolitan  Hotel and partook of a collation  which was much enjoyed-by all.'  Strawberry Festival.  ���The annual .strawberry-festival was held by the ladies of  Christ Church in the Wontworth  Hall last Wednesday evening',  h'el'reshnyent-s,' were served  throiigliouttbe evening. Several musical numbers were rendered by ������inessers 'Ryan and Gibbs,  and about. 10 p.m., tho hall was  cleared and dancing was indulged in I'or an hour or two. ' Tlie party of Washington, D.C,  newspaper correspondents who  have been visiting the largo  cities of western Canada during  the last month, passed through  Cranbrook on Monday on their  Marysyillu, July 12. ��� Now  that the smelter hero is in active  operation ^and there is eve_ry  promise of permanent activity,  the Marysville Townsitc company, with head offices at  Spokane, has decided to place  lots on tho market. The" demand  for building sites has been increasing of late, both on the part  of smelter employees and business men, but tho townsitc company declined to soil until such  time as there were satisfactory  assurances that the smelting industry was firmly established.  The company now feels tbat  this time has arrived, and Frank  P. Hogan, president of the company, has appointed E. J. Clayton, of this place, townsitc  agent.  F. D. Weeks, superintendent  of tho smelter has gone io the  coast for the benefit of his  health.  In a recent match with Cranbrook the local football team  won out by a score of 1 to.,0>  '.. Ah.arrangement lias been entered into by local storekeepers  to close on Sundays and at 7-.10  p.m. week days, except Saturdays'and paydays. This, jiliui  worked well,-but its success is  now .threatened by one of the  parties thereto failing to live'up  to the agreement. Six days a  week, and twelve, hours a day at.  that, ought to satisfy any .storekeeper, no matter how anxious  he. may be ' to dispose of his  goods. ..,..'���  It is expected thai with the  .completion of the now furnace  at the smelter the force of. men  employed will be considerably  increased. At, this time the referee sent  Miller of Cranbrook to the  benches for three minutes.  The second quarter started oft"  with last work ou both sides,  and ,Gow of Lethbridge shot, and  found the not in 2-1.")^ seconds.  A' second, goal was made by  Robinson in one aud a half  minutes.  Half time: Cranbrook 2, Lethbridge 3.  In the third quarter the  struggle was fierce, Cranbrook  done its best to even up the  score, but for the remainder' of  the quarter Lethbridge defended  its goal so well that their best  combination failed. Mr. McDonald of Lethbridge was off for  five minutes in this quarter.  During the final quarter the  pace was furious, Cranbrook had  tho ball at tho Lethbridge end,  and shot several times but failed  to score. Mr. McMillen was off  for three minutes, also Carruth-  crs for three minutes.
