In attempting 'to review the progress made iu lhe development, in'mining, in and around Fort Steele during the pasl winter, one must'take into consideration the fact ihat there has not been an idle man or loam, in Ibwn. This is a state of a'lfairs most gratifying. There has been more genuine activity displayed among the big hydraulic mines, at Wild Horse creek', this winter, in making their preparations for spring work, than in years past,'and the modern /improvements now going on, is of vast, importance, lo Fort. The outlook for silver-lead ! von Prolleuz, secretary o mining has improved because tho prospect, of assistance from the Dominion government is good; and we may expect that, the coming season will sec the silver-lead prospects in this vicinity become producing mines The outlook for future mining- is bright. And in the matter of transportation, the immediate construction of lhe Kootenay Central railway, will put new life and vigor to, the development of mining prospects in the ICooienay valley. The coining months will see great improvement in mining, also in the uuirkel price and demand for all the metals, and we may believe that the' future holds much better prospects for Fort Steele, than in past years. Under present conditions' a Conservative could ' have, been elected, but. bad a Conservative candidate been placed- in the lield then; i.s a great possibility tliat the Liberals would not have split: as il is iio\v they are c.iilfing one another's throat, politically, and sore to the core. The Macpherson-Kelly crowd are very bit lor at. the element'Ol' Liberals -who are, supporting h'oley, and who in fact him out, as they consider brought that' ' the lhe this out ~Ti7ey''hTfd" tli<r olectioiVwoiT.liad'i 1 not been I'or that. Then the Foley crowd are sore on Kelly crowd for "working"' primaries, and ,are making soreness felt. Dr. AicLnnes has found that, he cannot be elected. As lo the result: Irom the way the meetings are going, Foley will get a majority in the city. but the Kellycrowd, who went north with the returning officer, on'tbe Quadra", taking a good sized barrel with thorn, will get 90 per cent of the votes up there or they are not politicians. , Tt will be observed that Ihe north, in and around Atlin is entirely cut. off from Vancouver a,I this season, and the JCelly-Macpher- son crowd, and the returning oflicer, are the only visiting poli'iiici.in.s in that portion of the riding. Tliis majority, which' will" be obtained' at. Atlin. will over'balance any majority that ' pQley will got in, the'city. and will probably elect Macpherson. Some ofUie Conservatives are la.king pari in the' election, but the majority are leaving it absolutely alone. The Conservatives thai are taking part an;'in it on all three, sid(\s. and while making friends among tbe labor party by helping Foley, are. not making enemies of the Independents, because some Conservatives are also supporting L'r. McTnnos . The election is getting very warm, all parties are making a personal canvass I'or votes: Ihree libel suits have been commenced; 'meetings are held every night which are crowded, at which several fights take place. "Talk about a .family quarrel, this is a most fierce one."* Ln the event of a general 'election, the feeling here is over whelminglyb in favor of party lines, and Chas Wilson is certainly very popular. immense.
