One of the various resource's of Southeast Koolcnny wailing for development, is lhe petroleum found in the Flathead valley, in lho'southeastern por- 1 ion of this dislricl. , ' The main chain of lhe Kooky Mounla.iiis lying lo'the eastward oi' the Flathead ri\'er. is made up of slaty and sandy beds, resembling those seen north of the Kootenay Crossing, 'and in the pass of Tobacco river. The transverse' valleys of the Akami- na river.' Sage and Kishneena WeeksHol io w~~Y iirrsTr i kcrrff "SyiF" ' clinal folds in the rocks. In the former tlio cliffs rise on each side of the stream like walls in particoloured masonry, and are cut back at intervals' into semicircular' hollows which usually contain small lakes. ' This is a section of country but ,-Hltle known, and, is separated from the remainder of the district by a high range of mountains known its the Macdonald range. The natural outlet of tho valley is'down lho Plat head river into Montana, though there is a natural pass through, lhe Gallon range, which separates tlie Koolcnny from the Wigwam, river. ... - Public attention has been di-'. -reeled lo Ibis portion ol South east Kootenay,'not only by the discovery and local ion of large ' coal areas.' but from the faci thai l.h.o land is hold in reserve by lhe provincial -govern tfiont. Some years ago attention was culled lo litis district,.by the Undoing of crude oil in the possession of some Sloney .Indians who 'annually limited in lliis valley, and I hey were induced io show some prospectors where they obtained the oil. which 'Ihoy "the Indians'-' were in Ihe habit, of using as a, medicine for complaints of all kinds. The surface indications are good, 'and two different qualities of oil have been obtained. On Kishnoeiui, creek'a short distance north of the International Boundary is a black oil, similar to the Pensyl- vania and Ohio oils is found, but on Sage and A-kimina creek's some' eight or ten miles north, there is found tin oil that is iieiir- purc, and of a. high yellow color, which will burn in tt lump as it comes from the ground. Close by there is natural gas escaping from lhe bedrock which barns freely upon ignition. Some of 1his oil sent lo the Geological museum af Ottawa caused considerable eominejil. and was pronounced a fraud on account of its purity. Dr. Selwyn, head oi :lhe depart 1110,1 it made a special trip lo the valley, and was surprised to find the oil genuine, .and also thai this oil was found in (ho cainbrian formation, -which was something unknown, as all the oil Molds hifherlo dis- tapping oi these oil reservoirs. Prom lhe finding of all these indications over such a large area, and- in similar formation, we ' 11 may say that there is large oil Melds ,in Southeast Kootenay awaiting capital to develop them and,we may expect, that in the the near future fhiif Ihe oilfields of Southeast ICooteiiay will bo known till over the world. .
