NiERE is no branch of business more capable of profitable co-operation, than is mining, and yet 110 line is the principle applied so seldom. The diuarv prospector will lake to the hills as-soon as 1* s;msoh opens, and ere its close will have probably akrii off several new claims These he will try to .sp >se of, but he docs not succeed in very many in- amxs. alfhoui'h his record may entitle him to some ceeptsbudly rich ground Too often necessity com- Is him to part with n good property for a mere trifle, d in such cases it invariably falls into the hands of :>me speculator who holds on pending the opportunity :> sell ,u a respectable proht But assessment work ;as to be done if, ns is too frequently the case, the older docs not let his claim run out to be re-staked y some one else according to ore-arrangement. Not :mg ago there was a demand for undeveloped proper- es, but that day has passed, and the sooner the fact realized the better, At piesent there is a market >r proven properties only If miners who go preset inv. or those who hold a number of claims, would .lit co operate in developing what might tx? mutually greed upon as the most promising of their holdings, instead of waiting for capital to come in and pay some Ise to do the work, the result would be satisfactory o all concerned. Wherever this plan has been hon- lv tried it has proved a success. What is costs to DM fit a pro^jKXtor for a season's work would l>e n tuple fevith co-operation to maintain him during the time he jjjjvould be engaged in proving a selected property, be- the ired it to ^V.w^Vhat stage at which an investor becomes interested. :;>V^l^ie co-operative plan was recently adopted on the -I Y ^'Triune claim on Stiver Cup Hill in the Lardeau, with r ;' ':**:ue result that after seven weeksv wotk the little band //"Y- *>f practical .men are now shipping twenty tonsoi high - .a- ;rrat|e ore to the smelter, the profits on which will pay -...-' * diem handsomelv for their enterprise. We hope the - 'T ,?"fxample thus set will l>e followed by others, and that ,. Y be co-operative .system will be largely adopted in the Xootenavs. ___ That grim old dowager of China is; according to he Los Angeles il fining lie view. the incarnation in an aggravated form of Louis Hie bieu-aitne of France, whom history records as saying, " After rae the deluge.'' As a matter of fact history is not quite clear on that point. Some historians claim that credit for the celebrated saying must he given to Mme.de Pompadour, the king's mistress ; but that is not a matter of much importance just now What is of importance is that the grim old she-monster of China is doing the deluge business herself on a pretty extended scale, more extended even than that of the bien-aime or of his bien-aituee, which ever it was Just here it is well to recollect that this Chinese monster of the feminine eender is not Chinese at all. She is a Manchurian, as are probably all of those associated with her in her present devilish work, 1 bese Manchurians are termed Chinese because they have ruled China for more than ^oo vears. but ttiev are of the Tartar breed and not of the Chinese race, so that the Manchurian is nothing more nor less than a villianous, dirty, old, barbarous savage, whom nothing on God's earth could ever civilize. Stkveston, the big cannery, station on the Fraser River, is now under martial law. The fishermen, as already noted in these columns, went out oa strike because the can tiers would not yield to their demand of 25 cents per fish captured. For a time the Japanese held out with the whitemen, but now the, Japs have returned to work at the old scale, and the whitemen are left idle. A couple of years ago the whiteman and the Indians did the' fishing on the Fraser, but since then the great influx of Japanese and Chinamen has altered the condition of things, until now these- people have practically a monopoly of the business, and another big industry has been handed, over to the Oriental element in this country. Without going into the merits or demerits of the case, i% is regrettable to find the natives and whitemen of British Columbia being supplanted by the most undesirable class of foreigners. The danger which threatens white labor in this province may be inferred from the fact that at present there are employed in the fishery industry alone some 7,000 Japanese and 4,000 Chinamen .The two races do not agree under ordinary circumstances; but when it comes to a question of ousting the white- man.and that in his own country, there is a unanimity worthy of a better Cause. It is a pitiable sight to see the militia* called out to protect a horde of the most objectionable foreigners while doing a work which of right ought to belong to the native. In |io country in the world, we believe, wouki it be possible lor -i similar scene to be enacted. "* Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast," is a generally accepted fact. Of course these charms are not confined to the soothing of the savage; Music AM " Vl , v I.I-I AAl ->\>J m ** jr* rt^WSHMMSRHSW^^ If, THb^NELSO^ Yl I', ig|'..-JI m lYIl .ASfi': - fell tiflft-llPl.: ffeifr|l?$ lf|^f8?$y !' !H';. Th< pack on the Columbia has been ex- itionally light so far^ and the big run which was |pectedto*take place in July did not materialise, nor mt. If the industry is to be preserved on the Cob ibia some practical measures must be taken, and at [be. Several heretofore good streams in the United ites have been fished out, and with this object lesson Fore them the cannerymen of the Columbia are hearing themselves It was thought a few years ago pt the artificial propogation of salmon would keep the supply, but in this Case it does not seem to have desired effect. It is said that millions of young have been turned out in waters where there was k a supply of food for them and where their enemies sre numerous, so that only a very small proportion [them survived It is now suggested to plant the |nug (ty away up in the headwaters of the streams (ere the salmon go to breed and where nature has ivided food"lor the young- The hatcheries on the fitse! River give satisfaction, and there is no reason by, if proper precaution be taken, similar results bold not be obtained on the Columbia. _ cwsi^usy eK4*i"n* . The term "lead I - pencil," however, is a misnomer, as, in a miueralogi- I "-*-* sense, there is u t a particle >f lead in its com I %'^*..Mtion. The lead pencil originated wit h the dis- I ; sYvery of the graphite mines in hngland in 1664, I ^*ring the reign of Queen Klizabeth. As graphite '-* greatly resembles galena, the German name for J such is bleiglauz, it was given the name of blei, or . uL In the early days of lead pencil making the ^ lphite was sawed in thin sheets and cut into strips f * -idler and smaller until they were of a size to be *ercd with light slips, and thus serve as . pen-. \ The first pencil created much exeitement. vfc graphite mines of England were considered of in estimable value and were protected by law. But there was great waste--first, in digging, for many of the pieces were too small for cutting, and again in the manner of cutting the graphite, which was so crude that half the material was lost. So a b nding substance had to be invented. Glue, gum, isinglass and other substances were tried, but the graphite was only rendered hard and brittle and of uneven hardness. " Its marks were faint and indistinct, and in those days if the point broke it was quite an undertaking to sharpen'it away and the graphite heated over a light to soften it, after which it was drawn to a point with the fingers: In 1795 Conte, a Frenchman, came on the idea of using pulverized graphite and blinding clay. This discovery resulted in pencils of varying hardness, according to the amount of binding clay added, and each pencil was of exactly the same hardness throughout its length Soon' after this discovery improvements followed in mixing, rolling and sharpening the graphite composition, which was cut into lengths, placed in a warm oven to harden, and finally incased in wood, as seen today. i The last payment but one was made on the Juno on Morning Mountain, on Monday. It was a welcome sight, for it means much to the city. Just at present all hands are busy at the roasters preparatory to the blowing in of the furnaces. The intention is to keep the plant in continuous operation once a good start is made. A big force of miners is being put on at the Silver King, the water in the mine having been pumped out. Under to new arrangements Capt. Gifford will have full charge of the mine, and as he is a gentleman of great experience there is no doubt he will make the property pay handsomely. Mr. R. With three such men at the head of affairs, the Hall Mines & Smelting Co., Ltd., is bound to make a record. ; ' At the Venus a Mystic Rotary quartz crusher and pulveriser has been successfully installed by Mr. Tbos. J. Hampton, representing the Llewellyn Iron Works, Los Angeles, "Cal. The present capacity of the machine is twenty tons per day, but this can be readily increased. This is the first quartz crusher of this particular make in operation in the Kootenays, but from the satisfaction it is giving, and the many advantages it possesses over other makesnot the least of which is its low pricethe Mystic promises to become a big favorite. It is a wonderfully economic piece of machinery, 1 >4 cord of wood being ample to run it, for 24 hours,.while everything capable of amalgamation is saved. "< T.J. Hampton brought in on Monday a very fine sample of frfe-milling ore from a claim known as, the Star, on Eagle Creek, near Forty-Nine. He spoke of bonding the property, which is owned in Nelson, but this has already been done by Mr. Charles Parker to California parties. MISCELLANEOUS According to the Kootenaian the properties on the South Fork of Kaslo creeic are showing up remarkably well. During the last few days a good strike has been made on the Bismark property and on the Cork claim it is asserted that eight feet of ore has been uncovered, while several other properties are said to be showing up remarkably. Another strike of clean ore is reported from the Oueen Fraction, situated on the shore of. Slocan lake west of the Galena Farm. The Britannia group of mines on Howe Sound, 30 miles fr:>ra Vancouver, have been bonded to the British America Corporation, owners of the Le Roi mine, for $1,500,000, the terras being $50,000 pay abb Aug. 17, $50,000 for rive succeeding months, $100,000 payable each month for three succeeding months, on the 17th ; and $900,000 at the end of twelve months time. ft is reported in Chicago that a substantial advance on future purchase of copper is expected as an outcome of the copper trust organized by the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds The most significant feature of the situation is that the same interests which have iinallv cornered the world's copper markets have also recently acquired heavy interests in the General Electric Company and the Western Electric Company and the Siemens-Halske Company. Copper and e lectricity are near neighbors. ,,,, ...V >'- (,^V ,'-l''< "*mmmmmmmmmmmmm$mmmMmm lummwwiiiipm f HE-NELSON ECONOMiSf *< s. , '$3|A Wi % % n.i ,'<v pvii lift.; fg|-fO'.
