Mrs. Aylard's health was much

Farewell to J. L. White
Harry Clements, formerly of
Nelson, has 0 beautiful residence
in La Mesa that be calls Bonne
Brae. Harry looks fine. He
owns much real estate is part owner of a bank in La Mesa. He has
olive, orange and plum trees in his
garden. I dined with Harry and
hie amiable wife one day, and
appreciated it more than any meal
I have ever had in California. J
will see Harry again. While at
La Mesa I autoed to Grossmont
and visited tbe homes of several
artists, including the author of A
Perfect Day, and SchumanD-Hoink,
the famous contralto. In front of
her house floats the'American flag,
showing that she? has fonr sons in
the army and navy.
I heard Melba sing the other
night. Since the war began she
has earned 8400,000, and given it
all to the Red Cross. God made
no mistake when He created Nellie.
She is an Australian, and the people of her own country did not
appreciate her, until she went
abroad and became famous. Then
they worshipped her, but she never
forget their former coldness, and
lives more in Paris than Melbourne.
It is ever thus. We cannot see
genius when it is too close to onr
own firesides. Like a great painting you must view it from afar.

Provincial Demonstrator in
War Food Economy, Miss Olive
Hayes is holding a series of conferences and demonstrations in
Greenwood this week. Cooking
demonstrations will be held this
afternoon (Wednesday) commencing at 2:30 o'clock, and oa Thursday at the same time. All interested in cooking economy and
war bread are invited to attend
these sessions in the Guild Hall,
opposite the Post Office. Miss
Hayes opened the sessions on
Tuesday at which a good number
attended, who listened to her
speak on a most interesting topic.
On Friday, Miss Hayes- will hold
a conference at Rock Creek,
Now is the time for organization.
There will be greater need for production in cities, towns and villages this summet' than ever before.
Plan what you will do with the
back yard or vacant lot now, so
that when the season begins in a
few weeks hence, you will know
what to do and lose no precious
time about it. Once the garden
season starts it starts with a rush.
There is no shortage of vegetable
seeds except parsnips. Wholesale
dealers have plenty of seeds in
stock.
Sons of the Soil
Under the auspices of theOanada
Food Board, 25,000 Canadian boys
froni 15 to 19 years of agp, were
called to help out this summer on
the farm. To date, 23,000 responded in Ontario and the Western prcvinces alone. Quebec and
the Maritime Provinces hold their

A send-off that will be long remembered in Greenwood, and
which was attended by one of the
largest crowds on such an occasion
took place in the Masonic Hall on
Friday, April 12, in honor of J. L.
White, who left on Monday for
Victoria, to take up bis new duties
as Deputy Provincial Secretary.
A whist drive was held the firBt
part of the evening, of which there
was about 18 tables. Prizes were
offered and the Ladies first prize
| was   won   by   Mis3   Kate Smith;
Gents Grst,   Rev. H. W. Simpson;
Ladies booby, Mrs. Chas. Henderson; Gents booby, D. J. Matheson.
After the curds, G. A. Rendell
took the chair. A programme then
was gone through, whieh consisted
of songs, instrumental music and
speeches by D. J. Matheson, of
Phoenix, and I. H. Hallett. Mr.
Matheson made a short aud effective speech, dealing with the time
be had known the guest of the
eveniog, and how Jack will be
greatly missed, as he took such an
active part in all Hues of amusement, aud other public affairs of
the city.
I H. Hallett who followed was
in fine trim, aud delivered a witty
and much appreciated discourse.
He outlined Mr. White's life in
the. city, saying that it was 20
years since Jack first arrived from
the Slocan, and the speaker was
one of the first he had met here,
who at that time with the aid of
Robt. Wood, convinced Jack that
this was the place to locate, of
which he did, staying until his recent appointment at the capital.
Mr. Hallett also referred to Jack's
going, stating that it was an honor
to the town, to have one of its citizens appointed to.puch'a position,
but in his going Greenwood would
lose one of its most highly thought
of citizens. Before retiring Mr.
Hallet presented Mr. White with a
kodak a token from the citizens Of
Greenwood, in retuemberance of
the day when he lost a similar one
when on a picnic up Boundary .
creek, when the said article was .
lost in the deep. Mr. White then
took the floor, and responded in a
most able manner .and thanked
the . citizens. ' for their kindness .
shown him this evening and dur-
the years he. bad lived "in the. city, .
also that be was sorry to leave as :
the friend-hip in the Boundary
was of such a kind that it would
be bard to equal anywhere.
The affair came to a close with a,
dance, supper also being served by
the Ladies of the Red Cross.
Bush's orchestra supplied excellent
music for the dancers, who kept it
up until an early hour.

Must Farm or Fight
The Shiftless Hired Man and thc
Restless Farmer's Son
Thousands of men have been exempted from niilitary service because
they are farmers, and when they
were given the exemption it was
with the understanding that they
should remain on the farm. . That
j means a great deal to the farmer.
fThc shiftless hired man ancl the rcst-
i less farmer's sou know now that
they must stick to farm work. If
they evade it, military service is in
prospect. Official eyes, will be upon
them, and if they fail to stay with
the farm and he actual producers
! they will he taken and placed iu iini-

Atrocities in Serbia
Purpose Is to Demoralize Serbia and

Instances of atrocities practiced by
Austro-Bulgarian forces for ihe purpose of denationalising Southern Serbia and Macedonia are related in an

The appeal sUlcs that entire families were deported into Bulgaria,
and that every priest, schoolmaster
and doctor has been renmved. Only
one elementary school nd one secondary^ school aro allowed to operate. Serbians who refuse to enter j"
the ranks of the Bulgaria:', army ar

of mind is the soul of manly exercises.
"You have heard, 1 dare say, of
the hunter and sportsman's saint
uul patron, St. Hubert, and of
the noble stag that appeared to
iiim in the forest with the holy
cross between its antlers. I have
paid my homage to that saint; every
year in good fellowship am] seen
this stag a thousand times, either
painted in churches or embroidered
on the stars of his knights; so that
the honor of a good sportsman, I
hardly know whether there may
not have been formerly, or whether
there are not such crossed stags
even at tlie present day.
'But rather lot me tell you what
T have Keen myself. Having one
day spent all niy shot, T found myself unexpectedly in the presence
of a stately stag, looking at me as
unconcernedly as if he had known
of my empty pouches. I charged
immediateiy with powder, and
upon it a good handful of cherry
stones, for I had sucked the fruit
as far as tlie hurry would alow.
Tims 1 let fly at him and hit him
j ust on the middle of forehead between his antlers; ib stunned him
he staggeredyet he made off. A
year or two after, being with a
party in the same forest, I beheld
a noble stag with aline, full-grown
cherry-tree aboufe ten feet high between liis antlers. I immediately
recollected my former adventure,
looked upon him as my property,
and brought him to the ground
with one shot, which at once gave
me the haunch, and client sauce;
for the tree was covered with the
richest fruit, the like of which I
had never tasted before.

Nature has made British Columbia rich and
beautiful The waters that run through ^and
surround it, are teeming with edible fish, include

filled with almost every known mineral, while
the yellow power of eartlvgold, it hides amid the
sands of many a creek Its fertile valleys and
hillsides contain millions of acres that are doing
nothing to go 'OVER THE TOP," for lack of
cultivation* Its forests of gigantic trees are the
envy of the world* The scenery is grandly
magnificient, while the climate contains the ozone
that puts pep into the human frame, filling it with
life, health and energy.
