A Coming Town. , Cory Menhinick is one of the pioneers of Fish Creek, and while some of his friends describe him as a ''lucky beggar" wc are rather inclined to think his success is due to his shrewdness, for whether it is a townsite or a mineral claim, the good judgment of his selection is everywhere apparent. A Cornish- man to the backbone, Mr. "Menhinick has perpetuated in this new land several of- the names so familiar to cousin Jack, whether,in the field of story or the mine, Cambprbe, with" its great school of mines", is oncof the features of old Cornwall, and Mr. Menhinick, regarding the plot of land now known as Cum borne' us possessing the advantages which go to make a successful townsite in a mining camp, secured ,il for that .purpose, By the preparation of maps and . plans showing the townsite, and its relation to the mineral dis' coveries on Fish river, Mr. Menhinick did much to bring the district into prominence, and ncone of ordinary observation could visit Camborne without being most favorably impressed hy its surroundings, and .with n knowledge that here is the key to the Fish Creek mineral district. Situated on a level piece of land, at the junction of Fish river and Pool creeks, Camborne forms a convenient point for branching off to the different, camps, and' already the trails to the Gold-fit.c'.i an.I adjoining properties now known as the Camborne Group, on the right bank of Fish river, to' tho Eva, on the ieft bank, to the Imperial and Oyster groups between Fish river and Pool creeks, to the Wide West properties'tip Pool creek, and' to. the Beatrice all have a" common centre'ut Camborne, making it a convenient supply point for the leading camps in the district. The past season has seen con siderable activity at Camborne where several new buildings have gone up, and new businesses have been started. Tho hotel accommodation is fairly good. The original hotel, known as the Pendragon, a well-known Cornish'title, is owned by Mr, Menhinick, and.-is run by the' lessee, M. Buchanan. This hotel has' stabling accommodation atfncliedi , The other hotel is the Era,' built and owned; by J. A. McClyniont, of Rossland,'is also interested in a property near Camborne on which a good strike has been made. A barber's shop has been started by J." Kill,; Camborne is about 1S0U feet above sea level and is connected 'by wagon roads both with Coniaplix CORRESPONDENCE Redistribution. and Thornton's Landing. Mrs. .Drew is a successful poultry breeder, having very complete poultry houses and yards,'with a stock of about SO fowls. The soil at Camborne is rich, and capable of growing anything. In Messrs. Drew & Co.'s garden wc saw a crop of vegetables that would be a credit to anv garden. Camborne has b.;cn surveyed into lots by Mr, Pcveareau, P. L. S., of Comaplix, and the title has been obtained, so that purchasers of lots will have no dillicuky in procuring their" titles. H. S. Wallace, of Rossland, recently bought the controlling interest in the townsite, and is pushing its interests ahead most vigorously. He has appointed agents at Camborne, Rossland, Revelstoke, and other points, Mr. J. 1). Sibbald being agent for Rev-, elsloke. Among the lions of Camborne arc- its big cedars and with pardonable' pride the residents take visitors to sec these monsters of the forest, One tree which wc saw measured had a girth of o'ol feet, Another sight is ,one cedar tree driven clean through the trunk of' another by a snowslide-a most remarkable occurrence and one that could hardly be credited without being seen, To Tins linrroii: Annual Meeting -Election of , Officers, 11 The annual meeting o: tho liev* elstoke Curling Club "was held last evening at the Revelstoke" Hotel, President H. 'The Tribune's unkind and sarcastic reference's to '' Pot Hole?," its reflections on Xorth Kootenay lis a, wilderness of dead slakes and square ' miles, comes with a very' bad grace from the representative of Nelson riding. That great pap- fed constituency has probably more dead stakes and abandoned potholes to the square mile than any other, mining camp'in Kootenay.. Nelson riding mining camp,is a graveyard of baffled aspirations, baulked ambition, ruined prospects, blighted hopes and wasted treasure, grid-ironed with a plethora, of" rail* way' lines, wagon roads and trails that" afford cheap and competitive transportation, enjoying the advantages of a smelting reduction works within its boundaries, with the investment of million; of capital iu its numerous ledges, com-' bined with years of hardship and .toil by thousand of miners and prospectors, how many self-sustaining, productive,, and dividend- paying mines, has ^it got to, its credit? and per contrast, how many 'abandoned shafts, deserted drifts1', gopher cross-cuts and yawning pot holes adorn its mountain*slopes? Like the stars, of the heavens they are beyond "computation. What great record has- Nelson riding made' as 'a field for lucrative investment iu mining properties that its representative should feel warranted in casting slurs on North Kootena'y? Tho Tribune, id most unfair and tyrannical iu its discussion' of a redistribution measure, If cannot tolerate other people's opinions or brook any interference to the, carrying out of its pet hobbythe appointment of 12 representatives for the sec'ion .within its sphere of influence, so as to bo in a position to control tho destinies of British Columbia. Its allegation that under the Joe Martin agreement only one- member was to be allotted to Kootenay, and that given to Revelstoke riding, is widoof the mark. Biot'ttti was,to have additional rep* rissuYumioii, as well, as Revelstoke and Boundaryi One membcrwa^ to be taken from Lillooet'Cul'iboo and two from 'Vancouver Island, which at that titue was a tolerably fniiLiipportionment: The'Tribune has no justification- for stating that my idea of fainu-s is to give 13,000 people eight representatives'; while -11,000 should only be allotted the same number. Its great plea is "population. The areas, interests and welfare of large portions of the province, that contain, a . sparse population, are not considered. The Tribune however fails to point, out that population in a mining camp is largely superficial nnd transitory, Miners migrate like crows from one cornfield to another, and a largcproporlion of pros [lectors and miners are ready at n moment'.-} notice , to pull tip stakes and turn their attention and energies into new territory. This vvill also apply 10 mining capital for investments. The advent of. railways into the mining camps of Trout Lake, Fish Creek, and Big Bend will stampede thousands of people out of Southern Kootenay into (hat territory have been expended in the effort 'O open up that territory. Millions of acres of land grants, and bonuses have been absorbed by. railway, 'companies, and the treasury coffa's of both governments have hem, tapped and drained of heavy sums to give it railway-commuuicatic n with outside points. " .
